F-35B fighter jet's first vertical landing was years, billions in the making (video)

F35B fighter jet makes first vertical landing video

Lockheed Martin's F-35 program has been a political whipping boy seemingly forever, but the VTOL 'B'-variant of the pricey supersonic jet finally did what it was made for: a vertical landing. That happened nearly two years to the day after the estimated $304 million (each!) jet's first mid-air hover, at which point the Pentagon pegged the cost at $83 million. Inflation aside, it seemed to make a fine, if solid three point landing and Lockheed Martin says it's made considerable strides in the flight testing program over the last couple of years, despite all the overruns and delays. Hopefully that means the Marines, Britain's Royal Air Force et. al. will be able to deploy their F-35B's soon -- ie, before they're already obsolete. Check the video after the break.

'Featured Android Apps for Tablets' page now on Google Play website

Tablet Apps

Developers who spend time to make apps that look great on a tablet get a shout-out from Google on a new page at the Google Play site.

Google has put up a page at Google Play that focuses on apps designed with a tablet in mind. Android doesn't require applications to be specifically written for tablets, instead opting to allow developers to use UI elements like fragments to better utilize screen real estate on any device. But the truth of the matter is, most app developers aren't doing it. Hopefully, a chance to get featured by Google will jump start a bit more development in this area.

We're not saying it's easy to make one app work across all devices, because it's not. Google provides a good toolbox for it, and they have outreach programs for developers, but it still takes time and work to make you app look great on both a phone and a tablet. While Android is the market leader for smart phones, their tablet sales fall to a distant third behind Apple and Amazon. It makes sense for developers to focus on an app designed to look great on a smaller screen before he or she starts worrying about tablet-sized screens and the new challenges they bring.

Anyhoo, it's nice to see Google give props to a handful (there's 116 apps featured) of applications that are awesome on your tablet, and we hope this list grows and grows. To check them out for yourself, just follow the link below.

PFT: Raiders to cut ties with DT Kelly

Andrus+Veerpalu+Men+15KM+Free+Event+FIS+Nordic+d65c8_K8S1VxGetty Images

The 2011 labor agreement included an important provision:? HGH testing is coming to the NFL.? Nearly 20 months later, HGH testing is no closer than it was before the agreement was signed.

The latest evidence comes from the case of Andrus Veerpalu, an Estonian skier whose three-year suspension was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.? Naturally, the NFL and the NFLPA disagree as to the meaning of the ruling, and the incident has caused Albert Breer of NFL Network to learn that the two sides have scrapped an agreement to conduct a so-called ?population study? aimed at gauging the permissible natural levels of HGH in football players.

The details don?t matter, because neither the NFL nor Congress is willing to do anything more than huff and puff about the union?s refusal to honor the agreement to submit to HGH testing.? As a result, the perception is that neither the NFLPA nor the NFL truly want HGH testing.

Since the day the NFL banned the use of HGH, the prohibition has been enforced via the honor system.? The problem with the honor system? ? It works roughly as well as the rhythm method.? So with no way to test for HGH, players will get caught only if a vial of HGH falls out of their letterman jackets, or if the player?s name pops up in the records of an HGH supplier the government is prosecuting.

Surely, the NFL and the NFLPA realize that, if/when HGH testing begins, plenty of players will be caught.? Which will reduce the supply of healthy players.? In turn, players who quit using HGH will not recover as quickly from injuries, likewise reducing the supply of healthy players.

And it won?t be good for the game if players are busted for using HGH, even though most fans presume that they?re using something to get big, to stay big, and/or to rebound from big hits applied by other big men.

If the NFL truly wanted to force the issue on HGH testing, wouldn?t the league unleash the legal hounds and push the issue in court or via an arbitration?? The players already have agreed to submit to testing, and the NFL has more than enough ammunition to argue that the NFLPA deliberately is dragging its feet.? The idea that the NFL doesn?t want to force players to the needle by court order only goes so far.? At some point, the NFL needs to do more than complain about the NFLPA?s refusal to proceed, or the NFLPA will continue to refuse to proceed.

Likewise, Congress has proven to be impotent on the topic, periodically issuing hollow threats but never taking action.Through it all, the delay has given those who use HGH an opportunity to find better masking agents ? or to develop the next wave of substances that work like HGH but for which testing doesn?t yet exist.

The best news for the NFL, the NFLPA, and Congress is that neither the media nor the fans seem to care that the NFL and the NFLPA have struck a deal to abandon the honor system, but that the honor system has continued to be used for two seasons, and counting.

Honda minivan comes with a built-in vacuum

If we said the new 2014 Odyssey minivan sucked, Honda might just take that as a compliment. The updated Odyssey Touring Elite model debuting at the New York Auto Show will introduce a new feature likely to have significant appeal to family buyers ? the first in-car vacuum.

Big Week in the Big Apple as NY Auto Show Reveals Over Two Dozen New Vehicles

The HondaVAC is one of several new features being introduced on the 2014 Honda Odyssey which has gained steady momentum in an otherwise shrinking market segment.

Minivan sales are currently less than half of what they peaked at a decade ago, but there is still a sizable demand among family buyers who see them as the most functional and efficient people-movers on the market. The challenge is coming up with a consistent stream of new innovations.

Car buyers crave connectivity

?Honda is once again showcasing its reputation for innovation with HondaVAC, and its ability to provide true value to our customers,? proclaimed Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations at American Honda.

The outgoing Odyssey attempted to show that Honda could inject a little style into the segment, as well. The 2014 update undergoes only modest exterior tweaks, however, with a more deeply sculpted hood and revised fenders, as well as a more distinctive twin-bar grille. There are also new LED taillamp bars and revised badging.

Like so many of its competitors, the Japanese maker is slashing mass to improve fuel economy ? as well as handling. The hood and front fenders are now stamped out of lightweight aluminum.

Inside, the Odyssey adds some new finishes to brighten the cabin, along with an all-new center stack housing a number of new high-tech features. That includes an updated HondaLink infotainment system that can link with an owner?s smartphone to access live, personalized radio ?stations? and also give voice access to updates and news feeds from Facebook and Twitter. The system can also be used to find a nearby restaurant and then check its reviews.

New NHTSA iPhone App Lets You Track Recalls, Crash Tests, Even Helps With Child Seats

The 2014 Honda Odyssey will get a new Expanded View Driver?s Mirror along with new active safety features such as Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Safety is, of course, a critical issue for family buyers, and Odyssey has gained traction after scoring a five-star overall rating in the NHTSA crash tests. The 2013 model also was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

As for the HondaVAC, it was developed in cooperation with Shop-Vac and can operate continuously when the minivan?s engine is running. It will continue to operate for eight minutes after the engine is turned off.

Senate nears pre-dawn OK of Democratic budget

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An exhausted Senate neared approval early Saturday of a $3.7 trillion budget for next year that will let majority Democrats highlight their fiscal priorities, but won't resolve the deep differences the two parties have over deficits and the size of government.

Senators sorted through a final batch of amendments and were on course to approve the measure in the pre-dawn hours and leave town for a two-week spring recess. The non-binding plan would shrink annual federal shortfalls over the next decade to nearly $400 billion, raise taxes by nearly $1 trillion and cull modest savings from domestic programs.

In contrast, a rival budget approved by the GOP-run House balances the budget within 10 years without boosting taxes.

That plan ? by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., his party's vice presidential candidate last year ? claims $4 trillion more in savings over the period than Senate Democrats by imposing major cuts in Medicaid, food stamps and other safety net programs for the needy. It would also transform the Medicare health care program for seniors into a voucher-like system for future recipients.

"We have presented very different visions for how our country should work and who it should work for," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who chairs the Senate Budget Committee. "But I am hopeful that we can bridge this divide."

Congressional budgets are planning documents that leave actual changes in revenues and spending for later legislation, and this was the first the Democratic-run Senate has approved in four years. That is testament to the political and mathematical contortions needed to write fiscal plans in an era of record-breaking deficits that until this year exceeded an eye-popping $1 trillion annually, and to the parties' profoundly conflicting views.

"I believe we're in denial about the financial condition of our country," Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, top Republican on the Budget panel, said of Democratic efforts to boost spending on some programs. "Trust me, we've got to have some spending reductions."

Though the shortfalls have shown signs of easing slightly and temporarily, there is no easy path to the two parties finding compromise ? which the first months of 2013 have amply illustrated.

Already this year, Congress has raised taxes on the rich after narrowly averting tax boosts on virtually everyone else, tolerated $85 billion in automatic spending cuts, temporarily sidestepped a federal default and prevented a potential government shutdown.

By sometime this summer, the government's borrowing limit will have to be extended again ? or a default will be at risk ? and it is unclear what Republicans may demand for providing needed votes. It is also uncertain how the two parties will resolve the differences between their two budgets, something many believe simply won't happen.

Both sides have expressed a desire to reduce federal deficits. But President Barack Obama is demanding a combination of tax increases and spending cuts to do so, while GOP leaders say they won't consider higher revenues but want serious reductions in Medicare and other benefit programs that have rocketed deficits skyward.

Obama plans to release his own 2014 budget next month, an unveiling that will be studied for whether it signals a willingness to engage Republicans in negotiations or play political hardball.

In a long day that began Friday morning, senators plodded through scores of amendments ? all of them non-binding but some delivering potent political messages.

They voted in favor of giving states more powers to collect sales taxes on online purchases their citizens make from out-of-state Internet companies, and to endorse the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that is to pump oil from Canada to Texas refineries.

They also approved amendments voicing support for eliminating the $2,500 annual cap on flexible spending account contributions imposed by Obama's health care overhaul, and for charging regular postal rates for mailings by political parties, which currently qualify for the lower prices paid by non-profits.

In a rebuke to one of the Senate's most conservative members, they overwhelmingly rejected a proposal by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to cut even deeper than the House GOP budget and eliminate deficits in just five years.

The Democratic budget envisions $975 billion in unspecified new taxes over the coming 10 years. There would be an equal amount of spending reductions coming chiefly from health programs, defense and reduced interest payments as deficits get smaller than previously anticipated.

This year's projected deficit of nearly $900 billion would fall to around $700 billion next year and bottom out near $400 billion in 2016 before trending upward again.

Shoehorned into the package is $100 billion for public works projects and other programs aimed at creating jobs.

Saplings from Anne Frank's tree take root in US

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Saplings from the chestnut tree that stood as a symbol of hope for Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis for two years in Amsterdam are being distributed to 11 locations in the United States as part of a project that aims to preserve her legacy and promote tolerance.

The tree, one of the Jewish teenager's only connections to nature while she hid with her family, was diseased and rotted through the trunk when wind and heavy rain toppled it in August 2010. But saplings grown from its seeds will be planted starting in April, when the Children's Museum of Indianapolis will put the first one in the ground.

The 11 U.S. locations, which also include a park memorializing 9-11 victims in New York City, an Arkansas high school that was the heart of the desegregation battle and Holocaust centers in Michigan and Washington state were chosen by The Anne Frank Center USA from 34 applicants.

Winners were selected based on their commitment to equality, demonstration of the consequences of intolerance or historical significance to civil rights and social justice in the U.S., according to a news release from the center.

"The heart of our mission is tolerance. ... Tolerance is really essential for being able to bring better welfare to everybody," said center spokesman Mike Clary.

The tree is referenced several times in the diary that Anne Frank kept during the 25 months she remained indoors until her family was arrested in August 1944.

"Nearly every morning I go to the attic to blow the stuffy air out of my lungs," she wrote on Feb. 23, 1944. "From my favorite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like silver, and at the seagulls and other birds as they glide on the wind."

A global campaign to save the chestnut was launched in 2007 after city officials deemed it a safety hazard and ordered it taken down. The tree was granted a last-minute reprieve after a battle in court, but age and nature ultimately brought it down.

Jeffrey Patchen, president and chief executive officer of the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, said the sapling planted in the museum's Peace Park will stand next to a limestone carving of a podium with Anne's diary on it. A mock chestnut tree looms over the entrance to the museum's permanent Anne Frank exhibit, which features live performances in a space that teaches visitors about life in the Secret Annex where the Franks hid.

"We're taking the lead in producing the educational materials that will go along with the tree," Patchen said. "We're producing this unit of study ... that focuses heavily on the humanities and presents the tree through selections of her diary and ... as a symbol of renewal."

Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. plans to plant its sapling in September, on the 56th anniversary of the previously segregated high school's integration. A group of black students called the Little Rock Nine, who braved angry mobs in the fall of 1957 to integrate the school, became a symbol of the civil rights movement.

"Both (Anne Frank and the Little Rock Nine) dealt with hatred from ignorant people," said Nancy Rousseau, the school's principal. "All of them displayed great bravery and courage, which wasn't necessarily seen then or now, also, in adults. They were all children."

Other states that have sites receiving saplings are Massachusetts, Idaho and California.

The Anne Frank Center wants the sapling project to go beyond the initial planting of the trees. The center is launching an education initiative called Confronting Intolerance Today that will encompass a "teaching and discovery" website to create dialogue and show how the sites are using the sapling project to advance tolerance, a distinguished speaker series and temporary exhibits from the center that will show the history of Anne Frank.

"We know that the tree was a sign of hope of Anne Frank who was unable to leave her living quarters," said Yvonne Simons, executive director of The Anne Frank Center USA. "She wrote about it in a diary. For us, the tree portrays a symbolism of hope and growth and renewal."

France confirms death of Al-Qaida chief Abou Zeid

PARIS (AP) ? France says Al-Qaida-linked North African warlord Abou Zeid was killed in combat with French troops in Mali in February.

In a statement Saturday the office of French President Francois Hollande said the death was "definitively confirmed" and that Zeid's death "marks an important step in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel."

Chad's president had said earlier this month that Chadian troops had killed Abou Zeid. He was a pillar of the southern realm of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, responsible for the death of at least two European hostages.

The French military moved into Mali on Jan. 11 to push back militants linked to Abou Zeid and other extremist groups who had imposed harsh Islamic rule.

Mum In The Spotlight ? Bopping Babies' DJ Bubbles

Hi, my name is Polly Thatcher aka DJ Bubbles. I am a full-time Mum to 3 children; Rowan (7), Millie (5) and Dominic (7 months) ? a very cheeky baby that defied all the normal?pregnancy planning!

Three and a half years ago I set up Bopping Babies so that I could work for myself, around the demands of a busy family with young children. Although I?had thought about the concept for quite some time, my original idea had to be put?on hold as my daughter, ?Millie,?was born 3 months early. We faced some hefty?challenges in the early months of her life, a long stay in hospital followed by a?catalogue of health issues when she came home. Once Millie was over a year old I?felt I could start looking at my idea and bring it to life. I?began scoping out the ?Big Idea?, doing research into baby?discos ? I visited ?Baby Loves Disco? but otherwise?found very few pre-school led ?disco? concepts. I?d identified a?gap in the market that I could fill and so set about devising a class for pre-school children to enjoy with their carers. I started planning weekly sessions: ideas for props, researching?suitable themes and I started listening to generations of disco music and?contemporary songs that could be used.

About Bopping Babies

On Wednesday 9th September 2009?Bopping Babies was born at Bramley Village Hall. Initially just?monthly sessions until I had enough content to start weekly?sessions. Since 2010, I have tried?a few different venues around Basingstoke but the constant regular?weekly sessions continue to be found at Chineham Village Hall and Bramley.

The sessions are a mix of dance and play. Each class provides 40 minutes of guided dancetime using props and instruments followed by refreshments and toys.?I also regularly run themed sessions i.e. pirates?and princesses, jungle animals as well as seasonal specials for Easter,?Christmas, Hallowe?en etc which has allowed additional creativity and the chance to scour for new music?to help build up the different themes. And plenty of opportunity to dress up

Music and dance is beneficial to all ages and these sessions allow pre-schoolers to?burn off excess energy, improve their physical tone and co-ordination and most of?all boost their confidence when dancing alongside their peers. The volume of the music isn?t be too loud and certainly not harmful to little ear drums so please rest assured.?Getting involved in?a session with your child will allow you to connect with both your toddler and your inner?child again.

Session details:

Wednesdays 10.30 Chineham Village Hall Returns 17th April 2013
Fridays 10.30 Cross House, Bramley Ongoing

Term time only. Sessions are?mainly attended by babies and toddlers upto school age however?there is no set age limit.

New faces are always welcomed ? Sessions are simply pay as?you go ? no need to book in advance.

Keep up to date with news and events ?by liking my?Facebook group.

Bopping Parties

Alongside Bopping Babies I have also set up Bopping Parties ? parties for children between the ages of 2?and 12 years. ?Bopping Babies? parties and ?Bopping Juniors? parties are great fun events which can be booked for any occasion; birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, toddler group parties? the list is endless. ?Theme requests are also possible i.e. pirates and princesses, dinosaurs etc.

The parties always include a great playlist of party and action tunes to get the?children involved and excited to get up and dance. And no party would be complete without the magical?ingredients: bubbles, props & instruments, games and dance activities.?The parties are easily adapted to suit the age of the children and the music, games and activities are tailored accordingly.

For more details about parties ? check my website

Thank you,
Polly Thatcher (Creator and Founder and current session facilitator)

Messaging Service WhatsApp To Extend Subscription Model To iOS This Year, But Don't Hold Your Breath For A Desktop App

whatsappWhatsApp, the popular mobile messaging app that eschews advertising in favor of a paid model, is getting ready to bring its iOS app in line with the apps it makes for other platforms by turning it into an annual subscription service. Jan Koum, WhatsApp's CEO, says that the company is planning this year to shift its iOS app to one where new users would pay annually to keep using, taking it away from a one-off download fee and bringing it in line with how it is distributed on the Android, BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Phone platforms.

Argentina blends devotion and marketing with pope

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- From slum chapels to Buenos Aires' imposing cathedral, Argentines celebrated their pope in Sunday Masses.

While the faithful prayed, vendors sold papal memorabilia and workers installed huge screens in the capital's central Plaza de Mayo in preparation for an all-night vigil ahead of Francis' formal installation ceremony, which will begin before dawn Tuesday Argentina time.

Mass in the slums began earlier and seemed more intimate. At the Villa 21-24, one of the capital city's most dangerous slums, many recalled how as an archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio blessed their tiny Caacupe Virgin of the Miracles chapel.

Not everyone could fit inside its yellow walls with painted saints and many stood outside. Blanca Franco, a 58-year-old housewife, listened and shed some tears.

"I have feelings in my heart that only God knows," Franco said. "I'm happy about the appointment of our archbishop."

Nearby, Marcos Manuel Solar, a 28-year-old former drug addict, smiled widely as he told passers-by that he had received the rite of confirmation from the pope himself. Solar, who works at a soup kitchen, said he kicked the habit through a rehab program funded by the church.

In the heart of Buenos Aires, the mood was festive.

Vendors outside the Cathedral sold pins, calendars and posters with the image of Francis. The flag of the Vatican City seemed to be the most popular sales item.

Uma Eiras, a 10-year-old student, waved a tiny one with its two white-and-gold vertical bands and said she would hang it in her room.

There seemed not to be a single pew empty inside the giant national Cathedral and many followed the Mass on large screens across the street.

Sabina Podrez, a 39-year-old scrivener, said she attended the Mass out of hope that Argentina and the world will change under a new pope.

"We were going to work disheartened, with insecurity," Podrez said. "This is a breath of fresh air."

Orthodox patriarch heads for pope's installation

ISTANBUL (AP) ? The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate says the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians will attend the pope's inauguration Mass in Rome, the first such presence in nearly 1,000 years.

Rev. Dositheos Anagnostopoulos, the spokesman for the Istanbul-based Patriarchate, says Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, is traveling to Rome on Monday to take part in Pope Francis' installation. He is the first ecumenical patriarch to take part since the Great Schism between their two churches in 1054.

Pope Benedict XVI had made uniting all Christians and healing the split a priority of his pontificate.

Anagnostopoulos says the decision to take part in the mass was "the fruit" of the growing dialogue between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Francis is to be installed as pope on Tuesday.

dyna markup: zodiac yeats: Home Improvement Tips for Spring - ECI ...

March 20 is the first day of spring! Is your home ready for April showers and May flowers? If not, we?ve put together some home maintenance tips to prepare your home for the bright sunshine to come.

Raleigh-Home-Remodeling

  • Check your gutters. The earlier spring months are know for bringing a lot of rain, so it?s important to check for loose or leaky gutters. If they are clogged or full of debris, the water can end up in the basement or crawl space of your home. Check to make sure your gutters lead away from your foundation and are free of any trash.
  • Inspect your roof shingles. From the ground, visually check your roof shingles for any damage from the winter. Replace any shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose as the summer sun can do serious damage to roof shingles. Plumbing vents, chimneys and skylights should be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
  • Store firewood away from the home. Keep your firewood 2 feet from your home and at least 18 inches off the ground. Firewood kept near the house can attract spiders, snakes, rats and other pesky insects you don?t want running around your home.
  • Check your hose faucets. Over the winter, the faucet pipes can freeze due to the cold weather. You can check them yourself by turning the water on and placing your thumb over the opening. If you can stop the water from coming out, more than likely the pipe is damaged and will need to be replaced.
  • Prepare your lawn equipment. Check your gas and battery powered lawn mower, weed trimmer, etc and make sure they are ready for the summer. Cleaning the equipment and installing new cutting blades will make the yardwork easier.
  • ECI Construction has over 25 years of home remodeling and home repair experience. As a North Carolina local, President Doug Muehle understands the effects the seasons can have on a home. If you?re ready to prepare your home for the upcoming warmer months, do not hesitate to give him and his team a call. Contact the best Raleigh home remodeling company by calling 919-971-6415 or filling out their online contact form.

Erase Accumulated Kitchen Grime with this Two-Ingredient Solution

Erase Accumulated Kitchen Grime with this Two-Ingredient Solution Kitchen cabinets can acquire a subtle but gross layer of grime over the years, but you can easily get rid of it with this simple DIY cleaning solution.

One Good Thing by Jillee suggests creating a mixture of one part vegetable oil and two parts baking soda. This should result in a thick paste that you can scrub deep into wooden cabinets with a toothbrush. While the accumulated grime in your kitchen might not be noticeable to the untrained eye, Jillee's before and after photos are impressive, so this is definitely worth trying if you haven't deep-cleaned your kitchen recently.

1000 companies going bankrupt in Italy every day - Financial Post

Italy?s industry chiefs have warned that the country faces a ?full credit emergency? as thousands of companies run out of critical funding, threatening a slide into deeper depression.

Confindustria, the business federation, said that 29% of Italian firms cannot meet ?operational expenses? and are starved of liquidity. It said that a ?third phase of the credit crunch? is under way that matches the shocks in 2008-09 and again in 2011.

The Italian economy is being suffocated. The country must intervene rapidly to reinject funds into the economy

It said the economy was caught in a ?vicious circle? where banks are too frightened to lend, driving more companies over the edge ? with 1,000?going bankrupt every day.

Franco Bernabe, head of Telecom Italia, said firms are ?dying from lack of liquidity? and called on the Bank of Italy to take bold action to head off a disaster. ?The Italian economy is being suffocated. The country must intervene rapidly to reinject funds into the economy,? he said.

Fulvio Conti, head of the energy group Enel, exhorted Rome to give the economy an immediate shot in the arm by paying euros 48-billion in arrears to companies, arguing that this can be done without breaching EU deficit rules.

Late payments have become a chronic problem across the board in Italy, with 47,000 official complaints last year. The research group CGIA di Mestre said that half of small companies cannot pay their staff on time.

The pleas for action come as a new report by Standard & Poor?s Wednesday warns that default rates in Europe have reached the highest level since the global crisis in 2009, with most of the carnage concentrated in the Club Med bloc.

S&P said the default rate for Italian non-investment grade bonds jumped to 9.5% last year from 5.7% in 2012 as local banks shut off funding. It was even worse in Spain, doubling to 14.3%.

The default rate in France has rocketed from 0.8% to 8.7%, the latest in a blizzard of bad news from the country as the delayed effects of tax rises, fiscal tightening, and the strong euro do their worst. Britain and Germany bucked the trend, falling slightly to 5.4% and 4.4%.

?

The combined effect of a worsening credit crunch and political paralysis in Rome is becoming a dangerous cocktail, with the risk of social revolt increasing as the months drag on. Analysts say fresh elections are unlikely to solve anything in this economic climate.

Spain still has a solid government but unemployment is already 26% and lay-offs are continuing at an alarming pace. Labour specialists AML Afi-Asempleo said the economy would shed 300,000 jobs over the first three months of this year. The ratio unemployed to the number of jobs available has risen to a record 107. Spain?s workforce is shrinking so rapidly that the social security system is running out of contributors.

Calls for fresh monetary stimulus from the European Central Bank are growing by the day. Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, said the bank still has some scope to ?cut rates further?.

Commentator Nouriel Roubini said the ECB is in danger of doing ?too little, too late?, warning that the bank cannot stand aloof as the rest of the world intervenes to drive down their currencies. ?The euro should be 10, 20 or even 30pc weaker to restore the competitiveness of the periphery,? he told CNN.

Pier Carlo Padoan, the OECD?s chief economist, called on Brussels to slow the pace of fiscal tightening. ?They have to take account of the economic situation, and that is deteriorating,? he said.

The credit crunch in Italy and Spain has deepened despite the sharp fall in sovereign bond yields since the ECB?s Mario Draghi promised to do ?whatever it takes? to back-stop the two countries.

There has been little or no feed-through to the parts of the economy that need funding most. Even strong Italian and Spanish firms must pay over 200 basis points more than German rivals to raise money, a handicap that makes it even harder for the Club Med countries to close the economic gap.

Has The MBA Become A Worthless Degree? - Careers ... - AOL Jobs

Harvard Business School MBABy John A. Byrne

If you asked Dale Stephens, the 21-year-old author of Hacking Your Education, he would undoubtedly agree. In a highly provocative excerpt from the book recently published by The Wall Street Journal, Stephens forcefully declares that even if you were accepted into Harvard Business School, you should decline the offer.

Why? Stephens, a college dropout, says that you should take the $174,400 that it would cost to attend Harvard Business School and invest it in yourself. "Consider what you could do instead with that $174,400," he writes. "The first step should be to move to a part of the country that supports your interests. If that's film, move to Los Angeles. Technology, San Francisco. Oil, Houston. You could live decently in these cities for $3,000 per month. Over the course of two years, that still leaves you $100,000 to invest in yourself."

Frankly, he is full of crap.

For one thing, a Harvard MBA does not cost $174,400. The annual tuition is $51,200 and it is severely discounted for at least half the students. In fact, Harvard's average fellowship support per MBA student was $29,843 last year, essentially a 58.3 percent discount on that annual tuition. And the rest of the money that one would need to get a degree can easily be borrowed at relatively low interest rates. It's a similar story elsewhere.

After a degree in law, the MBA has become the degree that cynics and publicity seekers love to bash. Yet, those three initials on a diploma are one of the most powerful and tried-and-true investments you could ever make in yourself. The vast majority of MBA graduates from the top 50 to 100 schools in the world double or triple their total pay thanks to the education they receive.

And you don't have to go to Harvard, Stanford or Wharton. At Notre Dame's Mendoza School, last year's MBA graduates landed average salaries that exceeded their pre-MBA pay by 149 percent. At the University of Minnesota's Carlson School, the increase was 132.2 percent, and at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, it was 122.2 percent, And these numbers exclude starting bonuses and other bennies that are often handed out to MBAs when hired.

At Harvard Business School, 3 of every 4 graduates last year reported getting a median signing bonus of $20,000 and 1 in 5 (21 percent) had median "other guaranteed compensation" of $25,230. Harvard MBAs lucky enough to collect all three (base, sign-on bonus and guaranteed comp) earned first-year median pay of $170,230. Not bad for a "worthless degree."

Interested in film? Go to UCLA's Anderson School where the MBA recruiters include Fox Entertainment, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony and Walt Disney. Those entertainment companies were among 148 firms that held recruitment events on UCLA's campus last year, not to mention the 1,105 job opportunities on the school's job boards.

What about technology? Among the biggest employers of MBAs are Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, and Amazon.com. Each of those firms and many more in technology recruit at more than a dozen business schools each year.

What about oil? You should be thinking of going to the University of Texas at Austin where Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Hess are among the top employers of MBAs for both internships and full-time jobs.

More: Great Jobs In Finance That Don't Require An MBA

And the truth is that for many of the very best companies, from McKinsey, Bain, Boston Consulting Group or Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley or JPMorgan Chase, you would be hard pressed to get even a chance to interview without an MBA degree. MBA jobs at those prestige employers, moreover, set young professionals up for the best and most compelling jobs later in one's career.

The immediate benefits of the degree are obvious. But then there is the enduring value of the network you inherit once you graduate. The very best schools boast powerful alumni networks that open all kinds of closed doors, from tip offs to plum jobs that are not advertised, to seed capital for a startup idea, to potential customers for your business. That certainly beats a cold call to someone on LinkedIn.

The data shows that the full cost of an MBA degree from a top 25 U.S. school -- including the lost of income from being in school for two years -- can be completely recouped within 3.1 (at schools such as the University of Iowa and Michigan State) to 3.8 years (Carnegie Mellon University).

Finally, education also provides something of a safety net in good times and bad. The research shows that the more education you have, the more likely you are to earn more money in a career and the less likely you are to be unemployed.

Stephens may not need an MBA to get a book contract and put up a website, but he won't be working at McKinsey, J.P. Morgan, Apple or Google anytime soon. A quality MBA program is a life-changing experience that builds self-confidence, communication skills, and a successful future. A worthless degree? I don't think so.

Syria's war affects generation of children

In this Friday, March. 8, 2013 photo, Justin Forsyth, chief executive of Save the Children, speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at the group's offices in Beirut, Lebanon. Save the Children, which has been providing humanitarian and relief in Syria and neighboring countries, called on all groups taking part in the conflict to allow unfettered, safe access to populations in need and to "ensure that everything is done to bring the fighting to an end." In this Friday, March. 8, 2013 photo, Justin Forsyth, chief executive of Save the Children, speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at the group's offices in Beirut, Lebanon. Save the Children, which has been providing humanitarian and relief in Syria and neighboring countries, called on all groups taking part in the conflict to allow unfettered, safe access to populations in need and to "ensure that everything is done to bring the fighting to an end." (AP Photo/Bilal Hussein)

(AP) ? Mohammed works at a Beirut supermarket where he waits on clients and carries their groceries home for a small tip that the 14-year-old saves to send later to his family in a village in northeastern Syria.

He is among thousands of Syrian children who have dropped out of school and fled two years of conflict that have claimed the lives of more than 70,000 people, including thousands of children.

He is also one of countless young Syrians now frequently seen wandering the streets of Beirut, pumping gas at stations and sometimes begging for money.

Aid groups warn that some two million children in Syria are facing, among other things, malnutrition, disease, early marriage and severe trauma as a result of the civil war.

To mark the second anniversary of the uprising against President Bashar Assad, the Britain-based charity Save the Children released a report Wednesday entitled "Childhood Under Fire." It says the conflict has left many children traumatized, unable to go to schools and struggling to find enough to eat.

"I have to say I have been shocked and horrified by the stories that I've heard from the children here in Lebanon who fled from Syria," Justin Forsyth, chief executive of Save the Children, told The Associated Press at the group's offices in Beirut.

"You never want to hear a child talk about watching their friend killed or their father tortured in front of them or their brother shot through the leg," added Forsyth, who spent several days in Lebanon last week meeting children among the estimated 320,000 Syrian refugees who have fled to the neighboring country.

Syria's children will need decades to heal from the trauma, he warned.

Similarly, a report issued by UNICEF Tuesday said unrelenting violence, massive population displacement, and damage to infrastructure and essential services caused by the Syrian conflict risk leaving an entire generation of children scarred for life.

"As millions of children inside Syria and across the region witness their past and their futures disappear amidst the rubble and destruction of this prolonged conflict, the risk of them becoming a lost generation grows every day," said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake.

The report, marking the 2-year anniversary of the crisis, said that in areas where the fighting is most intense, few people have access to fresh water. Also, one in five schools have been destroyed, damaged, or is being used to shelter displaced families.

In Aleppo, the center of months of fighting, only 6 per cent of children are attending school, the report said.

At the same time, children are suffering the trauma of seeing family members and friends killed, while being terrified by the sounds and scenes of conflict.

While the reports did not give a number of children killed or wounded in the civil war, the Violations Documentation center in Syria, a key activist group that keeps tracks of Syria's dead, wounded and missing persons, says that some 5,500 children, including 3,800 boys and nearly 1,700 girls, have been killed in the past two years.

VDC also says 901 boys and 28 girls are in detention while about 100 children are missing.

Forsyth said the 5,500 figure "is very conservative. A lot of children have been killed and injured."

Children in Syria were targeted early on in the uprising, and right groups routinely report on teenagers imprisoned and sometimes beaten and tortured.

One of the most shocking cases involving children was that of Hamza al-Khatib, 13, who was from the southern village of Jiza in Daraa province, where the uprising first broke out after security forces arrested high school students who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on a wall.

Al-Khatib was arrested at an anti-government demonstration on April 29, 2011 and not seen again until his mutilated body, with his penis severed, was delivered to his family weeks later. Al-Khatib became a symbol of the revolt, driving thousands of protesters into the streets.

Countless other amateur videos have been posted by activists showing children who were killed by shooting, shelling or air raids. Some were only weeks-old.

Save the Children, which provides humanitarian relief in Syria and neighboring countries, called on all groups taking part in the conflict to allow unfettered, safe access to populations in need and to "ensure that everything is done to bring the fighting to an end."

In the report, it said that young boys are being used by armed groups as porters and human shields at the front lines. It added that some girls are being married off early to protect them from a widely-perceived threat of sexual violence. Both sides of the conflict in Syria have accused each other of using children to protect themselves.

"The majority of people who are raped in war are usually children and that probably is the case in Syria," said Forsyth. He added that they don't have exact numbers but "I have interviewed children who were sexually harassed."

The report says that combined with the breakdown of society in parts of the country, and more than 3 million people internally displaced, the conflict has led to "the collapse of childhood for millions of youngsters."

Mohammed, the Beirut supermarket employee, stopped going to school after it closed because of the fighting. As the eldest of three siblings, he was sent by his family to Beirut to stay with his maternal uncle, hoping he could find work to help sustain the family.

"I make about 15,000 pounds ($10) a day," said the portly boy from the northeastern village of Shadadeh in Hassakeh province, which witnessed heavy clashes last month forcing thousands of its residents to flee.

"If I don't send money to my family, they won't be able to buy anything," he said. Mohammed gave only his first name, fearing for his security.

At a Beirut gas station, Suleiman, a teenager wearing a T-shirt and a blue baseball cap, spends his day washing cars.

"The fighting and shelling were terrifying in my city," said the boy from the oil-rich eastern city of Deir el-Zour near the border with Iraq ? an area that sees almost daily fighting between troops and rebels.

Forsyth said even though children are by nature resilient, the trauma they have been through will have a long-term impact on their lives.

"For millions of Syrian children, the innocence of childhood has been replaced by the cruel realities of trying to survive this vicious war."

Two law schools now offer partial refunds if you can?t pass the bar

Law schools are struggling these days. Applications are down nearly 50 percent since 2004 and at their lowest ebb lowest since the Reagan administration, as The New York Times notes.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And now lower-tier American law schools are starting to sound less like high-minded academics and a just a bit like Vince Offer ? the ShamWow! Guy.

Consider Florida Coastal School of Law and Charlotte School of Law. As The National Law Journal reports, both are testing out partial refund programs for graduates who meet certain conditions but fail to pass state bar examinations.

Florida Coastal and Charlotte are independent of each other, but they are both for-profit outfits affiliated with InfiLaw Inc.

Full-time tuition at each school is roughly $37,000 a year.

Under the refund plan at Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, students who don?t pass the bar after two attempts will get $10,000 as long as they have completed a selection of bar prep courses offered by the school.

In addition, anyone who meets a host of studying-related requirements but is nevertheless dismissed for academic reasons after the all-important first year will receive $10,000. (The school?s website helpfully recommends that ousted 1Ls use the money ?to defray any student loans incurred.?)

In another perk of sorts, students at Florida Coastal who don?t obtain clerkships, externships, clinic spots or some kind of satisfying legal experience while in law school will receive $2,000 in compensation.

Florida Coastal?s dean, Peter Goplerud, said he hopes the school never has to distribute any refunds.

?The key is that this is a partnership. It?s join accountability,? Goplerud told The National Law Journal. ?If students complete the requirements we?ve set out, we aren?t going to write any checks.?

The program at the Charlotte School of Law in Charlotte, North Carolina is less comprehensive. It offers $10,000 to students who fail on two occasions to pass either the North Carolina or South Carolina bar exams.

Daniel Piar, associate dean for academics at Charlotte Law, described his school?s program as a safety net for students who show they have dutifully prepared for their bar exams but can?t clear that final hurdle to law practice.?

?Law student these days, I think, have becoming increasingly more selective and savvier consumers, and they?re looking more at things like outcomes,? Piar told The National Law Journal. ?So I wouldn?t be surprised if we saw more schools launch these types of programs in the future.?

Most law schools including Florida Coastal and Charlotte don?t appear to be cutting tuition in response to the severe drop in demand for their services, as The Times notes.

Washington University Law School professor Brian Z. Tamanaha, the author of ?Failing Law Schools,? has argued convincingly that steep increases in law school tuition and law student debt have played a major role in the decline in applications.

In 2001, Tamanaha told The Times, the average tuition price for private law school was $23,000; by 2012 it was $40,500. That?s a 76 percent increase. For public law schools the average cost in 2001 was $8,500 and $23,600 by 2012 ? a 178 percent increase.

According to the Consumer Price Index, a typical good or service that cost $23,000 in 2001 would be expected to cost about $29808 in 2012. A typical good or service that cost $8,500 in 2001 would cost about $11,016 in 2012.
