Nigeria court: Life in jail for 4 bombers

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A Nigerian court on Tuesday sentenced four alleged Islamic extremists to life in prison for two bombings that killed 19 people last year, the official news agency of Nigeria reported.

Prosecutors brought conspiracy and assault charges against the suspects, though Nigeria has strict new anti-terrorism laws that make the death sentence mandatory for anyone found guilty in an attack that causes fatalities.

The fate of four other men accused in the same trial was not immediately known.

The eight are believed to belong to the Boko Haram Islamic sect that is terrorizing northeast Nigeria with attacks on schools. Britain on Monday banned Boko Haram ? whose name means Western religion is forbidden ? making membership of or support of the group a criminal offense.

The eight had been found guilty of masterminding and carrying out an April 8, 2012, bombing on an electoral commission office that killed 16 people and a July 10, 2012, bombing of a church that killed three.

They had also been accused of shooting dead three police officers on May 23, 2012 and bombing a political rally that killed three people March 3 that year, though it was not clear on Tuesday if they were convicted in these incidents.

Boko Haram has increasingly targeted civilians in attacks this year that have not been halted by a massive deployment of troops under a state of emergency declared May 14 in the northeastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

Boko Haram and splinter groups are believed to have killed more than 1,600 people since 2010, according to an AP count. Human Rights Watch says more than 3,600 people have been killed by the extremists since 2009.

As you may remember, the model brings waterproof sealing to stock Galaxy S 4 internals (5-inch 1,080 x 1,920 screen, quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage and LTE capability), while settling for a lesser 8-megapixel camera. Still, you'll be able to bring those megapixels to an underwater environment most Samsung models would shun. So, while you could save yourself a few pounds by going with the standard issue Galaxy, dropping a few extra quid a the source will mean when you get tossed in the pool at your next BBQ you'll only lose your dignity, not your phone.

Mobile Miscellany week of July 1st, 2013

If you didn't get enough mobile news during the week, not to worry, because we've opened the firehose for the truly hardcore. This week, Simple Mobile changed its low-cost plans for the better and actionable notifications in BlackBerry 10.2 were shown off in a video walkthrough. These stories and more await after the break. So buy the ticket and take the ride as we explore all that's happening in the mobile world for this week of June 1st, 2013.

Simple Mobile intros 500MB tiers for domestic and international calling

Mobile Miscellany week of July 1st, 2013

Simple Mobile changed its plans for the better this week, which now offers 500MB of unthrottled data on its $40 unlimited plan, rather than the previous 250MB. In addition, the MVNO also introduced a new unlimited international calling plan for $50, which also includes 500MB of unthrottled data. These changes aside, the carrier's pricing and offerings remain unchanged... which still stand as one of the better deals for users of unlocked phones. [Simple Mobile]

Actionable notifications shown in BlackBerry 10.2 walkthrough video

Following up to this week's leak of BlackBerry 10.2, one member of CrackBerry forums has created a quick walkthrough of the latest OS, which includes a look at actionable notifications and priority contacts. For the time being, it seems that responding to notifications is a bit cumbersome. First, you must touch a small arrow button to pull up the reply window, and messages can't be sent from the keyboard. Naturally, this implementation may change by the final build, but it stands as our best peek yet of what's to come. [CrackBerry]

Bing Audio extends to 14 new markets

Microsoft's recognition engine for music, known simply as Bing Audio, made its way to 14 new countries this week, which comes as good news for Windows Phone across the globe. The service is similar in functionality to Shazam, SoundHound and Google Sound Search, and is now available in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland. The latest deployment follows launches in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US, which now puts Bing Audio at 22 countries strong. [Windows Phone Blog]

Red Tree Reader Wants to be a Google Reader Clone

red tree reader 1 One thing I looked for in a Google Reader replacement was a service that looked and acted as much like GR as possible. Red Tree Reader isn?t that service yet, but according to the developers that is their goal.

Red Tree Reader is a relatively new free GR alternative, and it only launched in the last week of June. I?ve been playing with it this morning and while it?s fast and reasonably responsive Red Tree Reader is still missing enough features that this service might not fill the needs of everyone.

?
Click here for more Google Reader alternatives.
?

RTR has the usual list of feeds on the left and list of articles on the right, just like most news readers. But unlike most of its competitors RTR has only 2 viewing modes for the list of articles. There?s a list mode and a mode that shows the entirely of every post, rather than the half-dozen viewing modes offered by Feedly, BazQux (my preferred news reader service), and other similar news readers.

red tree reader 2

RTR does offer some sorting ability, including listing the new articles oldest or newest first. You can also mark posts as read as read depending on age (older than a day/week/fortnight), and you can also mark a post as unread (just like Google Reader).

Sharing options include Google+, Facebook, and Email, but not Twitter. Right now Red Tree Reader is only available in the web browser.

The reading mode looks pretty good, and as you can see it has the usual buttons along the top of the window:

red tree reader 1

I?m not sure what the arrow s in the bottom right corner are supposed to do (touchscreen?). But I can tell you that my usual GR keyboard shortcuts work.

Right now RTR is still importing my feeds from the OPML file. I was hoping to log in with my Google account and give this service access to my GR account, but that doesn?t seem to be working darn it. But one thing that is working are the folders I organized in GR. RTR also added its own folder for ?new subscriptions?, and it has turned out to be surprisingly useful (until it filled up with 500 feeds).

All in all, this news reader service isn?t ready yet (not for me) but it is one to watch. I like the design philosophy of the developers. They jokingly believe ?change is bad, change is scary?:

Red Tree Reader was created by Red Tree Labs. It was created in about a week, and designed to as closely mimic Google Reader as possible. Damn near same UI, same keyboard shortcuts (at least the ones implemented).

Nobody likes change, because change causes unnecessary stress and discomfort. I didn?t want a newer, more feature-full, next generation reader. That?s why I use (used) Google Reader, and I bet it?s the same for you.

Now that is someone I can related to.

NCAA Football 14 Preview: How Real are the Ratings for SEC Teams?

The theme for the next edition of NCAA Football 14 is 'Keep It Real.' So when it comes to the power ratings for each of the SEC teams in the game -- do they?

We're just a few days away from the unveiling of EA Sports' NCAA Football 14, marking yet another milestone in the long march from the BCS National Championship Game to the beginning of the new season.

The team of this year's game is "Keep It Real," which probably thrills the NCAA's lawyers to no end as they're fighting a lawsuit arguing that the "fictional" players in the game are meant to be real-life players, but I digress. Given that team, and with the release of the franchise's next installment coming up Tuesday, let's take a look at the overall ratings for each of the SEC teams.

And while there are all sorts of other factors to consider -- scheduling, tiebreakers, etc. -- let's use those power ratings to see what the division standings would look like if they fall in line with EA's numbers. We'll start with the West, where the leader (by a rather large margin) is unsurprising.

SEC WEST
ALABAMA 99
LSU 93
TEXAS A&M 91
OLE MISS 90
ARKANSAS 88
AUBURN 88
MISSISSIPPI ST 88

Now, the alphabetical order for ties makes the placement of Mississippi State even stranger than it would be -- I'd have less of a problem with them ranking fifth as opposed to seventh -- but it raises the question of just how good the Western Division Bulldogs will be this year. Only one of the bottom three teams had a winning record last year and is coming off three consecutive winning season, and it isn't Arkansas or Auburn. And it's not like Mississippi State still hasn't beaten Arkansas or Auburn under Dan Mullen -- they did so just last year. I'm not certain that Mississippi State is better than Arkansas or Auburn right now, but I'm not sure I see the case for all three of these teams being equal, either.

Ole Miss' rating also seems a bit generous to me. I don't have a problem with it being ahead of the bottom three teams -- but one point behind A&M, and rated 90 overall? Hugh Freeze has done a great job in Oxford, but I'm not sure I'd go putting the Rebels in the 90s just yet. Perhaps everyone in the bottom four ought to be backed up just a bit. (Part of this might be the way the game's system works out. The lowest team rating I've seen is a 60, and South Alabama clocks in at 68.)

On the other hand, the rankings of the top four here make a good deal of sense. You can quibble with the exact placement of LSU and Texas A&M, in particular, and whether Alabama is really that much better than either the Tigers or the Aggies. But those are largely quibbles compared with the other problems here. The order is at least defensible and perhaps even sensible.

SEC EAST
GEORGIA 91
FLORIDA 90
SOUTH CAROLINA 90
MISSOURI 88
TENNESSEE 86
KENTUCKY 84
VANDERBILT 83

This one gives me a bit more heartburn. First of all, by having Florida, South Carolina and Ole Miss all rated a 90, that suggests that Ole Miss is equal to the Gators and the Gamecocks, which strikes me as just a little bit of a stretch. We could test this a bit better if they were playing this year -- they're not -- but my guess is that Florida and South Carolina would both open as favorites against the Rebels. Not overwhelming favorites, perhaps, but favorites nonetheless.

But what really seems rather odd here is the bottom four. Of those four teams, one of them beat the other three in their games last year. Can anyone guess who that team was? If you said Vanderbilt, you are correct. This seems to me to be a case of ranking Vandy last because, hey, they're Vandy, not because of any tangible reasons on the field. Putting them behind Missouri, which was clobbered by injuries and all manner of other misfortune last year, might be understandable. Putting them behind a Tennessee team that they defeated by 23 points is questionable. But putting them behind a Kentucky team that they blanked 40-0 in Lexington last year seems downright ridiculous, even accounting for whatever changes might have happened in the rosters and such in the interim.

James Franklin's team might take a step back in 2013, but being at the bottom of an SEC East that still includes Kentucky and Tennessee implies that the wheels have fallen off the Commodores' road trip, and I just don't think it's likely. The 83 might be a bit too low.

Some of this gets back to the question of how the ratings themselves are devised. If Kentucky is an 84 in NCAA Football 14, that seems a bit high in and of itself. Kentucky was probably not as bad as they looked last year, and is likely better with Stoops and Co. leading the Wildcats this year. But an 84? That seems a bit high.

Of course, that would be in line with the bottom teams from the SEC West, as well. If the rankings of the bottom teams in the SEC are any indication, it looks like EA has joined those who think that even the worst teams in the SEC are better than a lot of the football that's being played out there.

Now, here's the potential fun part: If you want to participate in our next segment, keep it real in the comments below and someone will be picked to contribute to the second installment of our NCAA Football 14 preview.

Mass. mom in Brazil: Custody dispute stranded me

BOSTON (AP) ? Police in Brazil seized passports belonging to a mother and her 6-year-old daughter, stranding them in South America amid an international child custody dispute with the child's father, the woman says.

Shauna Hadden, a 33-year-old social worker from Agawam, Mass., said the trip was meant for her daughter Ava Machado to reconnect with the father she hadn't seen in more than three years. The mother, who works for the state Department of Children and Families, said a Massachusetts court gave her full custody of Ava after the couple's divorce in 2009.

But she and her family said her trip took an unexpected turn while she and her daughter were on the way to visit Ava's father, 32-year-old Donizete Machado. After flying to Rio de Janeiro in late May, Hadden got a phone call from a friend in Brazil who knows both mother and father warning her not to make the last flight to meet Machado, her mother, Linda Hadden, said Friday.

The friend said that Machado had plans to keep Ava and that the two shouldn't make the rest of the trip, for which Machado had already bought the tickets, according to Linda Hadden. Instead of taking a flight to southern Brazil to meet Machado, her daughter and granddaughter flew north to stay with friends in the northeastern city of Fortaleza.

But June 6, federal police came to them with a court order and took both passports, according to Ava's maternal grandmother, who said her daughter gave up the travel documents because she was scared Brazilian authorities were going to take Ava.

A Brazilian judge turned down Machado's request for full custody of Ava but said authorities wouldn't give back the passports until the father had a supervised visit with the child, according to the grandmother.

On Friday, a lawyer for Machado confirmed the passports were confiscated after the father's legal request and said the case would be dropped as soon as the mother agreed to let Ava meet her father.

It's common in Brazil for officials to confiscate the passports of parents if a judge feels there is a chance that a mother or father may try to take a child out of the country without the other parent's permission.

Besides having no passports, the mother and daughter have been put on a no-fly list by Brazilian authorities, Linda Hadden said.

Alessandro Saraiva, a Brazilian federal court spokesman, said he couldn't provide details because the case involves a minor and falls under secrecy laws. Brazil's federal police declined to comment. The U.S. Embassy in Brasilia would confirm only that Hadden is in Fortaleza and is receiving consular services.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Richard Neal, both of Massachusetts, say they've been trying to intervene in an effort to get mother and daughter back to the United States.

Lawyer Isabel Feijo also alleged that Hadden never intended to allow the father to meet Ava ? and instead left the U.S. planning to travel to the city of Fortaleza to meet a man she met online.

Feijo said Hadden and her former husband had agreed that he would pay for her and Ava's tickets to visit him in the town where he lives in southern Brazil, because he wanted to introduce his daughter to his family and friends.

The lawyer said Hadden agreed to travel with Ava to Brazil and arrived in Rio de Janeiro on May 21. The following day, Feijo said, Hadden was supposed to travel to the city of Florianopolis, where Machado would meet them, and then travel to the town of Criciuma, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) to the southeast.

"But she never showed up in Florianopolis, because she had already planned with her boyfriend in Fortaleza to go from Rio de Janeiro to Fortaleza in the northeast," said Feijo.

Feijo said that the return flight for Hadden and her daughter was scheduled for June 11. But because Hadden had not met with Machado by June 8, the lawyer filed the legal request that day to block the woman and her daughter from leaving Brazil.

The lawyer said that Feijo does not want custody of the daughter and that he's made that clear.

"He wants her to visit him and his family, and if the mother agrees to that, the request to seize the passport will immediately be withdrawn, we'll drop the case," Feijo said Friday.

She said that eventually, Machado would like to see his daughter once a year. The Brazilian lawyer also confirmed that Machado, who works as a house painter, had been expelled from the U.S. because he entered the country illegally through Mexico.

In an email to The Associated Press on Friday, Shauna Hadden said she and her daughter are stressed and want to come home.

"Ava is tired and having a hard time," she said.

Dozens injured after Fourth of July firework show goes awry in California

During a July Fourth fireworks show in Simi Valley, Calif., Thursday night, fireworks accidentally detonated into a crowd of spectators, injuring 28 people. NBC's John Yang reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

A Fourth of July celebration turned tragic in Southern California on Thursday night when fireworks shot into a crowd of as many as 10,000 people in what authorities said appears to have be an accident, injuring nearly three dozen people.

The chaotic scene in Simi Valley, Calif., was caused by an apparent malfunction, sending families waiting for a fireworks display rushing for cover only seconds into the show.

"What we understand is potentially one of the launching stations fell over, resulting in ignited fireworks going into the crowd," Simi Valley police spokesman Sergeant Tom Meyer told Reuters.

There was no sign of foul play, Simi Valley police said in a statement.

Police, fire and hospital officials say at least 34 people went to hospitals for treatment. Twenty were taken by ambulance and 14 went to hospitals in private vehicles. At least two remain hospitalized, both adults in "fair" condition.

Related: Simi Valley celebration turns chaotic

Witnesses described the mayhem.

?It was just a loud explosion,? witness Michelle Rodriguez told the TODAY show. ?We felt the heat pull back towards us.?

?That one row, all of the fireworks went off,? James Wilhite, who also saw the fireworks shot into the crowd, told NBC Los Angeles. ?They were actually aiming at us.?

Many of the injuries appeared to be ?like shrapnel injuries,? Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Mike Lindberry said. Among the people injured were four who were considered ?immediate transports,? Lindberry said, meaning they suffered moderate to severe injuries.

Other people suffered minor injuries, and were transported to area hospitals. None of the injuries were considered to be life threatening.

Lindberry said that the crowd was kept at least 350 feet from where the fireworks were launched, a distance required by the fire code.

Authorities said it appeared that a structure supporting the fireworks gave way, tilting them into the crowd. Eyewitness accounts and videos of the show gone dangerously wrong appear to show the fireworks launching horizontally.

?Although it is still unknown why the launching station fell over, there are no indications of foul play and it appears that this is an industrial-type accident,? the Simi Valley Police Department said in a statement.

?At this point there are absolutely no indications of foul play,? said Simi Valley Police Cmdr. Stephanie Shannon. ?We will try to determine to our best ability exactly what?s happened.?

The company that put on the show, Bay Fireworks, said in a statement Friday that it ?deeply regrets? the incident.

?The highly qualified staff of Bay Fireworks is trained on a regular basis in the procedures to properly set up and discharge a fireworks display,? the company said, adding that it will conduct its own investigation into what went wrong.

iMore weekly photo contest: Patriotism!

iMore weekly photo contest: Patriotism!

Tomorrow is the 4th of July for all our American readers so we thought a patriotic themed photo contest was in order. As to not leave anyone out, the theme is simply patriotism. Any kind and anything you want to snap in order to show support for your country. Whether it incorporates your nation's colors, flags, or anything else you find inspiring, we want to see it!

The contest begins today and ends Tuesday, July 9th, at 10pm Eastern time.

It's also time to announce the winner of last week's photo contest! And the winner is...

The gorgeous photo above was taken by ssklassen19. What we really loved about this photo was the balance and how the user chose to edit it. It isn't overdone but has just the right amount of editing work to really make not only the sunset but the landscape in front of it really pop and show every little detail. The balance is also cropped perfectly so you get enough of the sky to show that as the focus but enough of the landscape to really add detail to the photo overall.

It was captured with an iPhone 4S and edited with Camera+ and the native Photos app.

Congrats ssklassen19! We'll be contacting you shortly to claim your prize, a 4-pack of 5x5 inch DeepSquare Prints from our friends over at Static Pixels!

And without further delay, here are the details on this week's photo contest!

The prize: Olloclip for iPhone

Aside from a thumbs up from the entire iMore crew, this week will be giving away an Olloclip for iPhone which will give you the ability to capture wide angle, fisheye, and macro shots straight from your iPhone!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop, Lightroom, or other external editing programs! If you have external lens accessories such as an Olloclip or other snap-on lens, you are more than welcome to use them.

You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Cloudy skies in Jakarta were no match for the breathtaking haze that hit Singapore?on Thursday?as air-pollution levels rose to record highs and sparked a war of words between diplomats in both countries over who should shoulder the blame.

Companies have asked employees to work from home, the military has stopped training outdoors, and pictures of Singapore's iconic Marine Bay Sands towers barely visible through the haze have been splashed across social media platforms?and newspapers.

Despite the international blame game, the immediate cause was clear enough: fires used to clear land in Sumatra for farming and palm oil plantations. A local meteorological agency reported nearly 150 hotspots alone in Riau Province, itself a hotspot for mining, logging, and palm oil production.

Environmental advocacy group Greenpeace released a statement saying that the fires illustrated how Indonesia?s government policies aimed at reducing deforestation had failed?since half of them were in areas off-limits to land clearing.

Each year slash and burn practices in Indonesia shroud neighboring Singapore and Malaysia in thick haze. As deforestation has accelerated in recent years, it has worsened.

On Thursday,?Singapore sent a delegation from its environmental agency to Jakarta to call for immediate action.?Singapore?s environment minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, issued an angry statement?on his Facebook page saying no country or corporation ?has the right to pollute the air at the expense of Singaporeans? health and well-being.??

But Indonesia shot back its own statement: Singapore should stop ?behaving like a child,? said Indonesia?s?Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare, Agung Laksono, who oversees fire response.

Mr. Balakrishnan had asked the Indonesian government to name and shame the companies involved in the illegal burning. But Indonesia?s forestry ministry launched back, saying?Singapore and Malaysia shared the responsibility for putting pressure on the resource extraction industry since many of companies were based in their countries.

Microsoft kills Facebook, Flickr integration in Windows 8.1 Photos app

Microsoft kills Facebook, Flickr integration in Windows 81 Photos

If you enjoyed Windows 8's central Photos app that not only stored your local images but also those from other sites, you might be disappointed with Windows 8.1, if a post in Microsoft's forums is any indication. After a commenter noticed that Facebook and Flickr integration was gone, one of Redmond's employees said it was no longer necessary since other apps (including one arriving soon from Facebook) can now do that, unlike when Windows 8 was first launched. The spokesperson added that Microsoft "welcome(s) Flickr to do the same" and recommended the People app as another way to "socially engage" with your photos. Subsequent commenters felt differently, with one summing up the sentiment by saying the OS was moving backwards from its Hub pinnings and "forc(ing) you to be app-centric (like Android or iOS) instead of content-centric."

Rocket-launched camera reveals highways and sparkles in the solar atmosphere

June 30, 2013 ? Using an innovative new camera on board a sounding rocket, an international team of scientists have captured the sharpest images yet of the Sun's outer atmosphere. The team discovered fast-track 'highways' and intriguing 'sparkles' that may help answer a long-standing solar mystery. Prof. Robert Walsh of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) will present the new results on Monday 1 July at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in St Andrews, Scotland.

With partners in the United States and Russia, the UCLan team used a sounding rocket to launch the NASA High Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, USA. During its short flight, the Hi-C team obtained images of the solar atmosphere (the solar corona) five times sharper than anything seen before and acquired data at a rate of about one image every five seconds.

The new camera observed the Sun in extreme ultraviolet light and focused on a large, magnetically-active sunspot region. Images from Hi-C reveal a number of new features in the corona, including 'blobs' of gas ricocheting along 'highways' and bright dots that switch on and off rapidly which the group call 'sparkles'.

In the new images, small clumps of electrified gas (plasma) at a temperature of about one million degrees Celsius are seen racing along highways shaped by the Sun's magnetic field. These blobs travel at around 80 km per second (the equivalent of 235 times the speed of sound on Earth), fast enough to travel the distance from Glasgow to London in 7 seconds. The highways are 450 km across, roughly the length of Ireland from north to south.

The flows of material are inside a so-called solar filament, a region of dense plasma that can erupt outwards from the Sun. These eruptions, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), carry billions of tonnes of plasma into space. If a CME travels in the right direction it can interact with Earth, disturbing the terrestrial magnetic field in a 'space weather' event that can have a range of destructive consequences from damaging satellite electronics to overloading power grids on the ground. The discovery and nature of the solar highways allows scientists to better understand the driving force for these eruptions and help predict with greater accuracy when CMEs might take place.

Another new set of images could help explain an enduring mystery of the Sun. Astronomers have long struggled to understand why, with a temperature of two million degrees, the corona is around 400 times hotter than the solar surface. Hi-C images reveal dynamic bright dots which switch on and off at high speed.

These 'sparkles' typically last around 25 seconds, are about 680 km across (the size of the UK) and release at least 1024 (one million million million million) Joules of energy in each event, or around 10,000 times the annual energy consumption of the population of the UK (based on information from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change). The sparkles are thus a clear signal that enormous amounts of energy are being added into the corona and may then be released violently to heat the plasma.

Solar physicist Professor Robert Walsh, UCLan's University Director of Research, added: "I'm incredibly proud of the work of my colleagues in developing Hi-C. The camera is effectively a microscope that lets us view small scale events on the Sun in unprecedented detail. For the first time we can unpick the detailed nature of the solar corona, helping us to predict when outbursts from this region might head towards the Earth."

NASA Marshall heliophysicist Dr Jonathan Cirtain, principal investigator for the Hi-C mission said: "Our team developed an exceptional instrument capable of revolutionary image resolution of the solar atmosphere. We took advantage of the high level of solar activity to focus in on an active sunspot and obtained these remarkable pictures."

Voyager 1 comes closer to leaving the solar system...again

Scientists have detected one of the critical signs that the Voyager 1 is nearly in interstellar space. But this has happened before.

Spacecraft Voyager 1 is closer to being the first human-made object to leave the solar system ? but what exactly ?closer? means is still unknown.

Researchers are waiting for Voyager 1, launched some 35 years ago and now more than 11 billion miles away, to exit the heliosheath,?a region that extends past all the planets in our solar system by about 8 billion miles, into interstellar space. But ?about? is the critical word here, because the trouble is that scientists don?t know exactly how big that region is.?

Still, three papers, published in Science, report that scientists have observed one of the signs that they expect to see as Voyager 1 nears the solar system?s edge: the total disappearance of charged particles, known as termination shock particles, that had been steadily present for seven years.

That means Voyager 1 entered a previously unknown space region called the magnetic highway, or the depletion region, on August 25th, 2012, when the disappearance was observed. In that zone, the charged particles travel in and out of the heliosheath along a smooth magnetic field line. Scientists believe that it is the final zone through which the spacecraft must pass before it reaches the heliopause, the exact boundary between the heliosheath and interstellar space.?

?We entered an entirely new region on August 25th,? Ed Stone, lead project scientist for the Voyager spacecraft told the Monitor. ?We think this is the zone that connects to interstellar space.?

Scientists have not yet seen the critical third sign that would mark Voyager 1?s actual passage into interstellar space: a shift in the direction of the magnetic field. The heliosheath's queen is our sun, and the sun?s east-west magnetic field governs the zone. As the space probe exits the solar system, scientists would expect to see a magnetic shift as it enters a regional field with a completely different orientation.

Another sign that Voyager 1 is still in our solar system is that the cosmic rays the craft has begun to detect from interstellar space are traveling unevenly in multiple directions. In interstellar space, scientists expect those rays to be distributed uniformly, Stone said.

Voyager 1 was launched with its sibling, Voyager 2, in 1977, and both craft have already made tours of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune before veering toward interstellar space in 1990. Even though it was launched 15 days earlier, Voyager 2 is some 2 billion miles Voyager 1.

Voyager 1?s triumphant departure has been heralded before. In December 2004, the Voyager reached what is now known as the termination shock boundary, where particles blown outward from the sun suddenly slow down.?

Voyager 1 saw this solar wind hit a dead calm in April 2010, which again suggested that the craft was coming tantalizingly close to the edge of the solar system. That region is now known as the stagnation zone. At that time, the existence of the depletion zone up ahead was unknown.

Scientists aren?t being deliberately cruel by repeatedly announcing that Voyager 1 has departed. The heliosheath is a baffling, mysterious place, and information about its outer reaches is collected only as Voyager 1 continues its unprecedented journey.

So we don't know how long it will be before Voyager 1 leaves for good.

?It could be several more months, or it could also be several more years,? said Stone. ?There could be things we still don?t know about out there. Almost every day we?re learning something new.?

?That?s the nature of exploration ? you find out how nature really does things,? he said.

Kazakhstan trade trip poses human rights test for UK's Cameron

By Andrew Osborn

ATYRAU, Kazakhstan (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron helped inaugurate the world's costliest oil project in Kazakhstan on Sunday on a trip aimed at sealing business deals but quickly beset by questions over the Central Asian nation's poor human rights record.

Kazakhstan hopes Cameron's visit, the first by a serving British prime minister, will cement its status as a rising economic power and confer a degree of the legitimacy from the West it has long sought.

The visit takes place just days before the nation marks 15 years since the founding of the new Kazakh capital Astana, also the 73rd birthday of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, a national holiday and cause for celebration that has been anticipated for days in state media.

Nazarbayev, a former Communist party apparatchik, has overseen market reforms and maintains wide popularity among the 17-million strong population, but has tolerated no dissent or opposition during his more than two decades in power.

Cameron said he hoped the 30 businessmen accompanying him would sign over 700 million pounds worth of deals during his two-day trip.

"We are in a global race for jobs and investment. This is one of the most rapidly emerging countries in the world," Cameron told reporters on his arrival in the Kazakh oil capital Atyrau.

His office said he aimed to "put British businesses in prime position to secure contracts that the Government believes could total ?85 billion in the coming years".

Cameron is also hoping to persuade Kazakhstan to expand transit rights for British military forces relocating equipment from Afghanistan between now and a planned withdrawal next year. Nazarbayev has already granted overflight rights, but Cameron is looking for land transit rights too.

Cameron and Nazarbayev together opened the Bolashak (Future) oil plant which will process crude that is due to start flowing from the giant Kashagan offshore oilfield in September.

Royal Dutch Shell has a 16.81 percent stake in the facility, which is in the Kazakh segment of the Caspian Sea. Nazarbayev said last week consortium members had so far invested $48 billion, making it the most expensive oil venture in the world.

TEMPTING TARGET

As Britain's trade with the euro zone suffers because of the currency bloc's debt woes, it is looking further afield to forge business links with countries that have enjoyed rapid economic growth in recent years.

With a $200 billion economy, the largest in Central Asia, and deep oil and gas reserves, Kazakhstan is a tempting target. Britain is already among the top three sources of foreign direct investment, according to Kazakh officials.

Since its 1991 independence, officials say British firms have invested about $20 billion in their economy, part of a total $170 billion ploughed into Kazakhstan since then.

But more high profile trade links carry political risks.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said Cameron had a duty to use his trip to denounce human rights abuses.

"We are very concerned about the serious and deteriorating human rights situation there in recent years, including credible allegations of torture, the imprisonment of government critics, (and) tight controls over the media and freedom of expression and association," it said in a letter on Friday.

Answering questions from reporters in Atyrau on Sunday, Cameron said he never put trade and business interests before rights.

"We will raise all the issues, including human rights. That's part of our dialogue and I'll be signing a strategic partnership with Kazakhstan," he said.

"Nothing is off the agenda, including human rights."

Activists most want Cameron to bring up the case of Vladimir Kozlov, a jailed opposition leader, when he meets Nazarbayev.

An outspoken critic of the Kazakh leader, Kozlov was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in October for colluding with a fugitive billionaire in a failed attempt to rally oil workers to bring down the government. Kozlov denied the charges.

Nazarbayev, a former steelworker who now holds the title "The Leader of the Nation", says that he puts stability and rising living standards before hasty political changes in his steppe nation, the world's ninth-largest by area and five times the size of France.

Comparing Kazakhstan to "Asian economic tigers" like South Korea and Singapore, he has said he wants to turn it into "the economic snow leopard of Central Asia".

Egypt: Protesters flood streets to demand president?s removal

Egypt gripped by protests against president
Tens of thousands of people have massed in Tahrir Square (Picture: Reuters)

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in an all-out push to force Egypt?s president from office.

Crowds congregated in Cairo?s Tahrir Square and in cities across the country to demand the removal of Mohammed Morsi, who was elected only a year ago.

But thousands of Islamists gathered outside a Cairo mosque in a show of support for the leader ? carrying shields and clubs that they claimed were precautions against possible violence.

One person was killed and more than two dozen injured in fighting between supporters and opponents of Mr Morsi in the Nile city of Beni Suef, south of Cairo, security sources said.

Further bloody clashes were feared as tensions rose, with some of Mr Morsi?s followers describing the protesters as infidels and enemies of God.

They say street demonstrations must not be allowed to unseat a president who won a legitimate election after autocrat Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power in 2011.

Mr Morsi and his backers have forced through a constitution they largely wrote and given religious extremists a free hand while failing to address the country?s problems, it is claimed.

?I came here today because Morsi did not accomplish any of the revolution?s goals,? said seafood company manager Suliman Mohammed, one of about 100,000 people in Tahrir Square.

?I don?t need anything for myself, but the needs of the poor were not met.?

A defiant Mr Morsi said he had no plans to step down.

?If we change someone in office who was elected according to constitutional legitimacy, there will soon be people opposing the new president, too,? he said.

?A week or a month later, they will ask him to step down. There is no room for any talk against this constitutional legitimacy.?

Come Monday, NBA general managers officially can pick up the phone to call agents, players, relatives of players and anyone else who will help land free agents.

It becomes open season.

Unfortunately for the guys wearing the suits and ties in front offices, that recruiting process has gone on for weeks, months and, in some cases, years among the players themselves. It?s the NBA?s dirty little secret.

Chris Paul technically is a free agent. But all that?s happened under that veil is the point guard recruiting center Dwight Howard and picking out the next coach for the Los Angeles Clippers in Doc Rivers.

There?s your free-agent market.

Teams will spend the next two months getting better, fooling themselves that they have improved or purposely building to lose, hoping to land in the Andrew Wiggins lottery. You know who you are, Boston and Philadelphia.

Either way, let the intrigue begin. Well, pretend as if it?s about to begin.

TOP FREE AGENTS

Centers

1. Dwight Howard (Unrestricted) Welcome to ?The Indecision II,?? starring one of the more heartless big men in the game. Go get ?em, Dwight! Best guess: After saying yes to several teams and backing out, Howard ends up in Houston.

2. Al Jefferson (Unrestricted) The ?Carlos Boozer Consolation Prize?? of this summer?s free-agent class. Best guess: Utah would be smart to keep him, but a team such as San Antonio might sneak in to land the eventual replacement for Tim Duncan. Charlotte also is in play.

3. Andrew Bynum (Unrestricted) Start rolling the dice on bad knees and worse decisions on hairstyles. Best guess: After losing out on Howard, Dallas rolls out a contract full of incentives.

Power Forwards

1. David West (Unrestricted) At age 32, West knows that only a handful of teams are built to challenge the Miami Heat in the East, and his Pacers are one of them. Best guess: West stays put with Indiana.

2. Josh Smith (Unrestricted) Someday Smith will learn that he?s not a shooting guard. Unfortunately, someone will overpay this summer until that lesson is learned. Best guess: Desperate to help Kobe Bryant after losing out on Howard, the Lakers land Smith.

3. Paul Millsap (Unrestricted) The Jazz can?t keep Jefferson and Millsap. Best guess: They pass on Jefferson and keep Millsap.

Small Forwards

1. Andre Iguodala (Early Termination Option) The All-Star and former coach George Karl didn?t see eye-to-eye in Denver, but Karl is out. Best guess: As the playoffs taught Denver, they need a star. Iguodala is the best they have. The Nuggets re-sign him.

2. Andrei Kirilenko (Early Termination Option) Kirilenko put himself back on the map and wants Minnesota to pay him like a top stretch forward. Best guess: He stays put.

3. Kyle Korver (Unrestricted) Korver would love to return to the Bulls, and they would love to have him. Unless he?s willing to take a huge pay cut, it?s not happening. Best guess: Dallas lands the best pure shooter out there.

Shooting Guards

1. Manu Ginobili (Unrestricted) Ginobili looked old, slow and weathered in the playoffs, but he?s an institution in San Antonio. Best guess: Spurs.

2. Monta Ellis (Early Termination Option) Ellis opted out of Milwaukee because he feels as if he should be paid like an elite two-guard. Reality is about to hit him. Best guess: After a disappointing market, Ellis signs with some bad Western Conference team, such as Phoenix or Sacramento, never to be heard from again.

3. Kevin Martin (Unrestricted) Martin?s biggest problem in OKC was he wasn?t James Harden. Best guess: Martin stays in OKC, with a chance to make a run at the Finals.

Point Guards

1. Chris Paul (Unrestricted) Please. His decision was made up before Doc Rivers got on the plane to Los Angeles. Best guess: Clippers.

2. Brandon Jennings (Restricted) Several intriguing teams need scoring from the point-guard spot, with Dallas and Indiana atop that list. Best guess: He?s not going anywhere ? yet. Jennings stays in Milwaukee.

3. Jarrett Jack (Unrestricted) Jack was a huge veteran presence in the backcourt for the Warriors and a player they cannot do without just yet. Best guess: He stays in the Bay with Golden State.

BULLS? FREE-AGENT SHOPPING LIST

1. Marco Belinelli (Unrestricted) They would love to bring Belinelli back, especially with how far he came along defensively and in creating his own shot. Money is an issue, and one that won?t disappear easily. Best guess: Belinelli gets a can?t-say-no offer from a team that needs his scoring, such as Memphis.

2. Martell Webster (Unrestricted) Webster shot a career-high 42.2 percent on threes and would be a good bridge until Tony Snell learns the league. Best guess: Money still could be an issue.

3. Ronnie Brewer (Unrestricted) It has to happen. After watching Nate Robinson and Belinelli walk, the Bulls go back to what they know best ? a defensive-minded player. Best guess: Brewer comes cheap and is a Bull again.
