CSN: Moss stands by 'greatest' statement

Programming note: For comprehensive 49ers Super Bowl coverage, watch Chronicle Live at 5:00, SportsNet Central at 6:00, and 49ers Central at 6:30 on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

NEW ORLEANS -- In Randy Moss' opinion, Randy Moss is the greatest wide receiver who has ever played the game.

One day after making his comment at the 49ers' Super Bowl XLVII Media Day at the Superdome, Moss did not back down from his statement. He further explained his stance in another session with reporters on Wednesday morning at the team hotel.

[RATTO: Moss offers boldest claim in brightest spotlight]

Former 49ers receiver Jerry Rice, a first-ballot inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has the statistics to support his case as the greatest of all time.

Rice had 22,895 receiving yards in his career. Moss ranks third behind Terrell Owens with 15,292 yards. Moss is second in career touchdowns with 156. Rice is the all-time leader with 197.

"Everybody is going to have their opinion," Moss said. "I do not live on numbers. I really do not. If you sit here and just said, 'Who is the greatest running back?' Statistically it is Emmitt Smith. People would say Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers or Jim Brown. (But) their numbers do not match Emmitt Smith, but people would say Emmitt Smith is the best running back."

Moss said everybody must set their own criteria for judging the best.

"You make your own judgment," he said. "You really do. I know what I think. I am not going to sit up here and tell you how to look at it and how to judge it. I think when it comes to going out there, making plays and helping the team do the things that they are able to do to win the game, I think I am the greatest receiver ever. Point blank. Next question."

[MAIOCCO: Moss -- 'I don't like my role']

Moss' declaration during his hourlong session with reporters became one of the main stories of "Media Day." And that point did not surprise Moss, who is no stranger to the limelight.

"I think that it speaks of the impact that I have made on this NFL football league," he said. "If Joe Blow would have said it, I do not know if it would have been in USA Today.

"Since Randy Moss said it, it is front of the sports page. Like I said, I just try to stay humble and do my job. That is what I am able to do. I am able to come out and try to say these things, but I do believe in my heart and my mind I am the greatest to ever do it."

Top senator: Close gun background check loopholes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says closing loopholes in the background check system for gun purchasers won't threaten firearms owners' Second Amendment rights to own a gun and is a matter of common sense.

In a prepared statement for his committee's hearing Wednesday on curbing guns, Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy says that after the killing of elementary school students and staffers in Newtown, Conn., it is time to stop sloganeering and partisan recriminations on the subject.

Leahy says the background check system needs strengthening. By law, anyone buying a gun from a licensed dealer must have a background check, with convicted criminals and people with mental problems barred from purchases. Gun buyers at gun shows and online don't need the check.

China is reviewing game console ban, Microsoft looking to pounce

Did you know that in China, game console sales have been banned since the year 2000? While the law has not completely stopped the selling of game consoles in the country, according to a new report, China is currently looking into the ban and may reverse the law in the near future.

The report comes from Chinadaily who states that a government is currently reviewing the ban which was put in place to protect its citizens as it thought that video game consoles could impair the development of the youth in the country.

While the Xbox has not been allowed to have gone on sale, legally, this has not stopped vendors and individual from importing the console from regions that fall outside of this law. But officially, Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo are not selling their consoles in China.

If China does relax its stance on game consoles, this will likely have significant impact to Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo?s bottom line as one of the world?s largest economies would be open for business. Seeing that Microsoft has had a huge sales hit with its Xbox 360, we would be highly interested to see how Microsoft would fair selling its console in China.

It is worth noting that Microsoft has traditionally struggled in the Asia Pacific region, but, China is generally not a fan of Japan which is where the PS3 and Nintendo are headquartered.

You can bet that Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are watching this news closely because the minute that China would lift this ban, each company would need to be ready to pounce to attempt to take the largest piece of the marketshare pie.?

Sinkhole swallows building complex in China

Sinkhole swallows building: An enormous sinkhole opened up beneath a building complex in China's southern city of?Guangzhou Tuesday, swallowing five shops and one building.?

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / January 29, 2013

A sinkhole swallows an entire building complex in China's southern Guangdong province.

The ground gave way beneath a building complex in?Guangzhou, China, on Tuesday afternoon, sending several buildings plunging into the earth, but causing no injuries.

Relying on reports in Chinese media, the blog Shanghaiist describes the gaping hole as more than 3,200 square feet in area and almost 30 feet deep, and still expanding.?

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the sinkhole opened up near a subway construction site. Workers noticed that the land was sinking and managed to evacuate the 300 or so people inside the buildings before they collapsed. It is not clear whether the construction caused the sinkhole.

Sinkholes are often caused by the underground erosion of salt beds or soluble sedimentary rocks, such as limestone or dolomite. Groundwater flows through these rocks, creating subterranean caverns that can suddenly collapse.

In the past couple of years, large sinkholes have appeared in?Guatemala City; Tampa,?Fla.,?Quebec; Milwaukee; as well as Germany and Florida.?

Economists growing more upbeat about year ahead

NEW YORK (AP) ? Economists are increasingly, but still cautiously, optimistic about growth in the year ahead with the hiring expected to pick up in coming months.

A quarterly survey by the National Association for Business Economists released Monday shows half of the economists polled now expect real gross domestic product ? the value of all goods and services produced in the United States ? to grow between 2 and 4 percent in 2013. That's up from 36 percent of respondents who felt the same way three months earlier.

About half expect sluggish or negative performance, down from 65 percent in October.

The latest survey was conducted between Dec. 20 and Jan. 8 and asked 65 economists and others who use economics in the workplace about conditions at their firms or industries. It found that 34 percent of firms now expect to expand their payrolls in the next six months, the highest percentage since April of last year. Meanwhile, 2 percent said they expect their companies to cut payrolls through layoffs, while 14 percent see payrolls trimmed through attrition.

A quarter of respondents also said employment grew at their firms in the fourth quarter, which is comparable to the levels seen in the first half of 2012. The same percentage also reported a rise in wages at their firms in the final three months of the year, up 10 percentage points from the last survey.

Overall sales growth was stable in the fourth quarter with results mixed across industries. For instance, growth slowed in the services, finance, insurance and real estate sectors, but rose in the transportation, utilities, information and communications sectors.

Timothy Gill, chair of NABE's survey committee and director of economics at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, noted that sales growth was stable despite "widespread uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of the fiscal cliff."

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the steep tax hikes and spending cuts that were to take effect Jan. 1 unless the White House and Congress reached an agreement to avoid them. The survey found that 27 percent of respondents postponed at least some hiring and capital spending during the quarter as a result, while 72 percent said the issue didn't affect hiring.

Despite stable sales growth, survey respondents noted that profit margins deteriorated in the fourth quarter, with 25 percent saying their margins increased, down from 27 percent in October. On the flipside, 18 percent reported declining profit margins, compared with 15 percent a year ago. Over the next three months slightly more than a third said they expect primary non-labor costs to rise. That's down from 43 percent in the previous survey.

Expectations for capital spending over the next year weakened from the last survey. Only 40 percent expect their firms to grow capital spending, down from 52 percent.

For consumers, the survey suggests modest inflation could be in the works, with two-fifths of respondents ? the highest share over the past year ? saying they expect prices to rise in coming months. Most of those expecting hike prices think the increases will be less than 5 percent.

First look: The Carbon for Android Twitter app

Carbon for Android

After many months and a few false starts, the long-awaited client prepares for initial release

It's tough to talk about the Carbon for Android Twitter client without saying a few things up front:

  1. No, it's still not available. But that we've been given a pre-release version to share should tell you something.
  2. Yes, we're all very much aware that we've been talking about Carbon, off and on, for more than a year now. (A whopping six stories out of some 6,000 written over 13 months, if our math is right.) Announcements of imminent release have come and gone, followed by long periods of silence. You can either choose to get over that, read this preview and give this app a shot when it's released in the near future, or not.
  3. There are now two Carbon apps for Android. This one, obviously, is the Twitter app, from the developer dots & lines, which first brought Carbon to webOS, where it garnered much praise. It later came to Windows Phone before being put out to pasture, much to the chagrin of this Microsoft faithful. The other Carbon app is a backup and sync client from Koushik Dutta. We're not sure which app will see first public release (our money's on the backup app), but having two apps with the same name is about as fun for us as it is for you, we reckon.
  4. Carbon (the Twitter app) may well be the best-designed Twitter app we've used yet -- and there are some good ones out there.

So with those things in mind, join us for our first look at the long-awaited Carbon Twitter app.

5 tips for cancer screenings that could save your life

Sometime during 2012, U.S. Latinos crossed a disappointing threshold; cancer surpassed heart disease to become the leading cause of death.? According to an American cancer society report,? one in every two Latino men and one of three Latino women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, with one in five Latino men and one in six Latino women dying from the disease. ?In total, 112,800 Latinos will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and 33,200 will die from some form of cancer.

The most common causes of cancer in Latino men are those of the prostate followed by colorectal, lung and leukemia.? In women, breast, colon, rectal, lung and thyroid are the most frequently reported. However, in men, lung and colorectal, liver and prostate cancer are the most common causes of death, whereas in women, breast, lung, colon/rectal, pancreas and ovarian cancer are the most common. The painful truth is that many of these cancer deaths could be prevented.? Detection and removal of early cancer lesions in the breast, colorectal, cervix, oral cavity and skin, as well as vaccinations against cancer causing viruses (human papilloma virus causes cervical cancer in women) are likely to lead to successful cancer treatment.

Are there differences between cancers in Latinos versus non Latinos???????

Not all the news is bad regarding Latino cancer.? Overall, the number of new cases and death rates are lower among Latinos than among non-Latinos. Yet Latinos are likely to be diagnosed with a more advanced stage of cancer than a non-Latino which directly points to a lack of early screening.? Sadly, we Latinos have not completely embraced life saving cancer screening and do not seek medical checkups when symptoms occur which often means it is too late.

Why such low levels of cancer screening in Latinos??

The most common reason for poor screening pertains to healthcare barriers, such as lack of health insurance.? Unfortunately, Latinos have a lower rate of access and use of all preventative services such as cancer screening.? In addition, Latinos may not have benefited from educational awareness and outreach campaigns that led to improved screening practices in non Latinos.? Studies show that effective communication strategies and presence of social support may improve participation in screening examinations.? It is essential that we continue to promote and highlight early cancer detection as an effective way for improving cancer screening participation overall.

In addition to a yearly medical checkup which should include periodic screening for various cancers depending upon age and gender, here are some important tips for cancer screening that could save your life for some of the more commonly-occurring cancers:

  1. ?Breast cancer: Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at the age of 40.? Clinical breast exams should be part of a periodic health exam every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 years and older.
  2. Colon/ rectal cancer:? Beginning at age 50, men and women should begin screening with either colonoscopy every 10 years or flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years, barium enema every five years or CT colonography every five years.? You also need to have an annual stool blood and immunochemical tests with high-test sensitivity for cancer DNA.
  3. ?Prostate cancer: Healthcare providers should discuss the benefits of early prostate cancer detection including rectal exams and PSA blood tests ? a specific marker for prostate cancer.? African-American men and men with a strong family history of one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age should have a discussion with their healthcare provider beginning at the age of 45.
  4. ?Uterine-cervical cancer: Screening should begin within three years after a woman begins having sex but no later than 20 years of age.? Screening should be done every year with a regular Pap test or every two years with other types of specific tests.? At age 30, women who have had three normal test results in a row may get screened every two to three years.
  5. ?Uterine-Endometrium cancer: ??The American Cancer Society recommends at the time of menopause all women should be informed about the risks and symptoms of endometrial cancer and encouraged to report any unexpected bleeding or spotting to their physician.? Screening for endometrial cancer with endometrial biopsy beginning at age 35 should be offered to women with or at risk for hereditary colon cancer otherwise known as Lynch syndrome ? a condition associated with multiple cancer types.

It is essential that everyone be aware of cancer risks so that once and for all we should not have the dubious distinction of having cancer as the top killer of Latinos in the U.S.

Kuwait MPs target financial help for citizens

KUWAIT (Reuters) - A parliamentary committee in Kuwait proposed on Sunday that the government pay a portion of the interest on citizens' personal loans and give a 1,000 Kuwaiti dinar ($3,500) gift to each Kuwaiti without such debts, state news agency KUNA reported.

The proposal from the financial and economic affairs committee, which is made up of members of parliament, would need approval of the wider assembly and the country's ruler if it is to be passed into law.

Lawmakers elected in December had originally sought a complete bailout of billions of dollars of household debt but were met with strong resistance from policymakers who said the plans were not feasible.

If the proposal becomes law it would not be the first time that Kuwait, one of the world's richest countries per capita, gives out such financial aid.

In 2011, to mark three major anniversaries, ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah granted 1,000 dinars to each of the country's 1.2 million citizens and as well as free food rations for 13 months.

Kuwait's oil wealth and generous welfare state have helped to shield the Gulf country from severe Arab Spring-style unrest, although there have been frequent demonstrations over political participation and other local issues.

Under the plan proposed on Sunday, the government would pay off interest incurred on loans. KUNA said this applied to the period between January 2002 to April 2008, citing committee rapporteur Safa al-Hashem. ($1 = 0.2818 Kuwaiti dinars)

Hotel Transylvania Blu-ray + DVD Review

Kidzworld checks out the monster animated comedy Hotel Transylvania. Should you take it home?

By: Lynn Barker

Count Dracula as a doting dad? Yep, to a ?teen? daughter Mavis who is 118 and more than ready to leave their home; a vacation hotel for monsters!

Story Goes: After his wife died, Count Dracula (voice of Adam Sandler) built Hotel Transylvania, a resort for monsters where they can escape persecution by evil humans. Problem is daughter Mavis (voice of Selena Gomez) is turning 18 (well 118) and feels more trapped than safe. She dreams of exotic lands and people her age.

At Mavis?s big birthday bash where everyone from Frankenstein to the Wolf Man has gathered, a hapless young hiking human named Johnny (voice of Andy Samberg) stumbles in and it?s love at first sight for him and Mavis. Disguised as Frankenstein?s cousin, Johnny impresses the whole gang with music and fun. Drac is determined to get rid of the lad before Mavis runs away with him.?

Special Features: Goodnight Mr. Foot is a cute animated short film featuring Bigfoot?s attempt to get some rest as a hotel guest while a bumbling witch/housekeeper keeps accidentally waking him. Quite fun but very short.

Deleted Scenes are presented in both semi-finished animation and storyboards. One series deals with how Dracula met and courted Mavis?s mom Martha. This is very sweet and must have been cut for time. Another deleted scene is a fun rap called ?Vampire Girls? that is worth a listen and maybe a dance.

In Meet the Staff and Guests: Voicing Hotel Transylvania, we get to see all the major voice actors recording their voices and this is always fun. The producer talks about what certain actors brought to each character. We learn that Adam brought his kids into the booth with him for inspiration and that Selena recorded for hours without a break. It?s great to see this excellent voice cast at work!

Making the Hotel focuses on developing the story and putting the project together. Interesting.

Progression Reels cover every aspect of doing the animation for the movie. In voice-over, an animator takes you through hand drawn vs. 3D computer animation, using ?motion blur? to indicate fast movements and other cool ?tricks?. You learn about lighting and painting the backgrounds and that a team of animators were sent to the actual Transylvania to get the ?look? of the movie right. A very comprehensive ?making-of? featurette.

Music Video ? ?Problem (Monster Remix)? features Becky G. and guests Will.i.am. This is really catchy and fun to dance to.

Filmmakers? Commentary is the Director, Producer and Visual Effects Supervisor talking about making the film both funny and scary and balancing the two. Lots of tech info and tidbits on the film?s look.? More techy for older kids and teens.

Wrapping Up:? Hotel Transylvania is a cute, if ?nothing new? film. It?s predictable and maybe too ?silly? at times but still fun enough and worth collecting. The extras on this Blu-ray/DVD set cover just about everything from the ?look? of the movie to the actors voicing the roles. Alone, the movie would get 3 stars but with the extras on this set, we?ll go 4.

Investing in Retirement

Have been doing something similar. Two points to note that will affect the amount you should put aside for living expenses and as a hedge against a bear market:

o The biggest drop in dividend from one year to the next that I have experienced in my portfolio thus far is roughly a 33% cut in 2008/09. So if your expenses is less than 67% of your yearly dividend year you may be able to make do with less of a cash cushion for living expenses.

o At the depth of a recession, some of your counters may do a cash call. You may end up being severely diluted if you have no cash cushion for that and other investment purposes especially if there is a "sale" on.

Just for sharing, I only keep about 50% of my yearly living expenses as a cash cushion (mainly for emergencies) as I aim to control my living expenses to below my yearly dividend income. Last year it came in at about 75% so the cash cushion is worth about a great recession event lasting more than three times as long.

I separately hold 10% of my portfolio in cash as an investment opportunity fund and deploy it only if I can buy a portfolio of stocks for P/E 6 and below.

Finally, you may want to think through the possibility of a systemic black swan event that can throw you completely off course. A personal example for me is CLOB in 1997 which set me back a couple of years.

Indonesia readies for $1 trillion trade talks

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Indonesia may hold the key to a $1 trillion injection into the global economy.

That's how much the World Trade Organization believes is riding on talks later this year in Bali, when trade ministers hope to cut through some of the red tape that slows global commerce.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press that failure is not an option and that a strong effort is being put in to ensure that the WTO meeting in Bali is "crowned with success."

The current trade talks, known as the Doha Round, began in 2001, and after a decade of little progress for a range of reasons, many had pronounced the negotiations to reduce global trade barriers as dead.

There are hopes that the current fragile state of the world economy, including the debt crisis afflicting the 17 European Union countries that use the euro and unspectacular U.S. growth, may add impetus to the discussions.

"It's very critical now, especially with the difficulties in the global economy, especially in the eurozone," he said of efforts to reach a new global free trade pact. "Trade facilitation becomes a key driver for economic recovery, so this is now even ever more important to what it was before."

Trade ministers from 24 nations met Saturday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in an unofficial gathering hosted by the Swiss government.

Afterward, Swiss Economic Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann said the group agreed they could reach a tentative agreement on some of the key elements of a global trade deal this summer, in preparation for the ministerial talks in December at Bali.

Schneider-Ammann said he sensed some "optimism" that efforts to streamline customs procedures and other rules to reduce the costs of trade "will be successful."

The ministers agreed to resist protectionism, focus on elements such as trade facilitation and agriculture, and to "take stock" around Easter of the progress being made, Schneider-Ammann said.

"Serious attempts to deliver results in Bali have already started," he added.

The Doha negotiations have been billed as a way of boosting economic development among the poorest countries, by reducing barriers on their exports to wealthier markets.

The WTO's director general, Pascal Lamy, has been telling the Davos gathering of political, business and academic elites that an international trade deal would provide a $1 trillion boost to the global economy. He estimates world trade is worth about $22 trillion.

Flanked by Schneider-Ammann, Lamy told reporters that he believes it is technically "do-able" to craft draft agreements on some of the key elements of a deal by next summer.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said he had to "temper" his enthusiasm for a deal since it has eluded the world for a decade.

Areas of dispute include tariffs on manufactured good, agricultural subsidies, market access and intellectual property rules. Brazil, China and India have resisted U.S. demands to lower taxes on imports of manufactured goods.

"But, at least of the 24 countries represented today, it felt like we had made more substantive progress," Kirk said in an AP interview. "The good news is we've spent a lot of work on a smaller, more realistic package centered around trade facilitation, which can be a huge benefit to developing economies. And it feels like that is starting to bear fruit."

Kirk, who leaves his job next month, said the ministers renewed their commitment "to double down, do what we need to do" to reach a deal in Bali. "I'm as hopeful as I've been in a long time."

Monster storm expected to explode in Atlantic. It may be one for the books.

NOAA forecasters say an unnamed extra-tropical storm will experience explosive intensification over the North Atlantic this weekend. Its central low pressure could rival a category 4 hurricane's.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / January 25, 2013

Forecasters are predicting explosive intensification this weekend for an extra-tropical storm in the North Atlantic that is expected to eclipse the intensity of last October's superstorm Sandy.

Unlike Sandy, the nameless North Atlantic superstorm poses no threat to land. But it does highlight the power such storms can attain.

It's forecast to develop winds of up to 98 miles an hour, while the air pressure at its center ? expected to reach a low between 920 to 930 millibars ? would rival that of a category 4 hurricane, according to forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md.

The system is the same storm "that gave us some snow a couple of days ago in DC," says Robert Banks, a forecaster at the Ocean Prediction Center. The storm intensified as the cold air moved out over relatively warm North Atlantic water, which is feeding energy into the system.

In addition, the system is merging with two other upper-level troughs ? providing the storm with yet more punch.

It's not clear how this storm will fare in the record books, Mr. Banks says. But over at the Weather Underground's web site, data gathered by British weather historian Stephen Burt shows five other storms between 1824 and 1986 with central pressures ranging from 920.2 to 925.6 millibars.

An extra-tropical superstorm in January 1993 holds the record for low pressure ? 913 millibars ? for North Atlantic winter storms in an event that destroyed an oil tanker after it ran aground at the Shetland Islands. The tanker, the MV Braer, was carrying 85,000 tons of crude oil.

Congress charts new collision course over deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The nation's sharp disagreements over taxes and spending are on a re-routed collision course, as Senate Democrats launch a plan that includes new taxes and House Republicans vow to speed up their plan to balance the federal budget with spending cuts alone.

The Republicans' new approach would require even deeper cuts in social programs than they pushed last year. Liberals denounced those earlier plans as severe and unfair, and they say the new version would be worse.

The new commitments by House and Senate members stem from the ongoing dispute over raising the federal debt ceiling. The House voted Wednesday to postpone any showdown over the borrowing limit for three months. The Democratic-led Senate plans to endorse the idea, which the White House also supports.

That means the next big budget clash will occur in March. That's when major, across-the-board spending cuts ? both parties dislike them ? are scheduled to begin unless they are replaced by a different deficit-cutting technique.

It's possible that both parties will continue to find ways to postpone and minimize tough decisions on taming the deficit. But the new House and Senate endeavors could make such dodges more difficult. Voters, meanwhile, may get a clearer picture of the unpleasant choices they face.

"The American people will have a chance to compare the two approaches," said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., who wants deep spending cuts and no new taxes. The only way to shrink the government, he said, "is to choke the monster."

House Republicans now vow to balance the budget in 10 years without tax hikes. They say the methods might include reducing future benefits for Medicare, and possibly Social Security, for people now in their late 50s, rather than those 55 and younger.

The search for savings must "move over into entitlement spending" more so than before, said Rep. John Fleming, R-La.

Balancing the budget in 10 years without tax increases would require deep spending cuts, causing many analysts to view them as politically near-impossible. Such an effort would require cuts "that are a complete nonstarter for anybody ? probably even including House Republicans themselves," said Michael Ettlinger, an economist at the Democratic-leaning Center for American Progress.

But House conservatives say aiming for that goal is important. They demanded this week that GOP leaders agree to balance the budget in 10 years as the conservatives' price for supporting the three-month extension of federal borrowing powers.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called the new Republican goal "Ryan on steroids." She was referring to earlier Republican budgets drafted by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, the party's 2012 vice presidential nominee.

Ryan's earlier plans would have changed Medicare into a voucher-like program with limited government contributions to health care for seniors. His plans, endorsed by most House Republicans, also would have given states full responsibility for running Medicaid ? the health care program for the poor ? with a reduced federal contribution.

Even with those changes, Ryan's 2011 and 2012 plans would not have balanced the federal budget for decades.

As part of the deal putting off the debt limit showdown, the Democratic-run Senate made concessions of its own: It agreed to debate and pass a budget for the first time in three years. That exercise will force senators to commit themselves to politically distasteful spending cuts and tax increases that they previously had avoided.

Democrats, including President Barack Obama, say new tax revenues must be part of any eventual bipartisan budget accord.

"As we go forward to reduce the deficit, we need growth and job creation, we need spending cuts, we need revenue," Pelosi said during Wednesday's House debate.

Democrats say new limits on tax breaks that mostly go to high-income households could generate billions of dollars in revenue.

But Republican leaders, noting that Democrats achieved a 10-year, $600 billion revenue hike as part of the "fiscal cliff" compromise earlier this month, say further tax hikes are off the table.

The Republicans' "no new taxes" mantra has clashed many times with Democrats' vows to protect government programs. The result, for years, has been deficit spending.

The latest House and Senate decisions will merely heighten that debate.

Democratic senators, no longer able to sidestep budget details, are certain to renew their push for tax increases to accompany further spending cuts. And House Republicans have made their deficit-reduction goals harder to achieve by promising to balance the budget in 10 years instead of, say, 30.

McDonald's fish to get 'sustainable' tag

2 hrs.

McDonald's says it will be the first national restaurant chain to carry a label from a group that certifies sustainable fishing practices.?

The blue "ecolabel" from the Marine Stewardship Council certifies that the Alaskan Pollack used in McDonald's Filet-O-Fish sandwiches come from suppliers with sustainable fishing practices.?

Major retail chains including Wal-Mart and Whole Foods already use the council's label. The nonprofit group is paid a royalty fee from companies that use its label. For McDonald's, that means the fee would be based on sales of its fish offerings, such as the Filet-O-Fish and the Fish McBites that will be launched as a limited-time offer next month.?

The Marine Stewardship Council, based in Seattle, isn't the only group that offers consumer labeling for seafood. Last year, for example, Whole Foods also stopped carrying wild-caught seafood that's "red-rated," which indicates it's either overfished or caught in a way that harms other species.?

The move reflects the growing concerns among consumers about the sources of their seafood. Major supermarket chains, including BJ's Wholesale Club, have also moved recently to try to make their seafood selections more sustainable.?

The Marine Stewardship Council has about 300 fisheries in its program, representing between 12 to 14 percent of the world's fisheries, said Kerry Coughlin, the group's regional director for the Americas. Fisheries can go through a confidential pre-assessment phase to get guidance on whether they're ready for certification. Coughlin said about 30 to 40 percent of fisheries aren't ready when they start the pre-assessment phase, but that more than 90 percent obtain certification after beginning the full, official assessment process.?

McDonald's gets all its fish in the U.S. from a single Alaskan Pollack fishery, Coughlin said. The chain's restaurants in Europe already use the council's label.?

A spokeswoman for McDonald's, Christina Tyler, said the all U.S. stores should have the labeling by early February. McDonald's will promote the certification on packaging for other products, including Happy Meals and drinks.?

The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., stopped using Eastern Baltic Cod in 2007 because of sustainability concerns. Since then, Tyler said the company has sourced Alaskan Pollock and New Zealand Hoki exclusively from fisheries with the Marine Stewardship Council's label. Now the chain uses only Alaskan Pollock for its fish items in the U.S.?

CSN: Reed says Brady apologized, not mad about kick

January 22, 2013, 3:02 pm

???

Ed Reed's thigh is sort of tender, but he's not mad about it.?

The Ravens safety joined Baltimore's Glenn Younes radio show Monday in part to discuss last Sunday's AFC Championship win over New England, which meant rehashing the kick he received from Tom Brady.?

The Patriots quarterback made contact with Reed when he stuck up his right leg at the end of a second quarter run. ?

"Leg is feeling alright. A little sore right now," Reed told WJZ-FM. "A little slide kick [from Brady], you know what I'm saying. But it's a tough spot the quarterback's in. You know, I understand Brady's point. Him protecting himself. I know he's a great player. I respect Brady and his game for all it stands for, and I know he's not a dirty player. And emotions get going in the game."

Reed said Brady broached the incident via text. The pair ended up talking on the phone, with Brady making an apology.

"I told him, 'You know, it's good, man.' "

NFL officials are reviewing the kick to determine whether or not Brady should be fined. As far as Reed is concerned, however, the matter is settled.?

"Brady's a great competitor and I love going against him and I know where his heart is at for this game. It was all good."

Wave of attacks in Iraq leaves 22 dead

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A string of attacks, including three car bombings in and around Baghdad, killed at least 22 people Tuesday, deepening fears of a surge in violence as sectarian tensions fester in Iraq.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, blame is likely to fall on Sunni insurgents such as al-Qaida's local franchise for Tuesday's bloodshed. The group often uses indiscriminate attacks to sow fear among Iraq's Shiite majority and undermine the government's authority.

It was at least the fourth day this year that insurgents overcame security measures to carry out high-profile attacks claiming at least 20 lives. Over a two-day stretch alone last week, a series of what appeared to be coordinated bombings and other strikes killed nearly 60 people.

The upsurge in violence has coincided with a wave of Sunni-led protests against Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Shiite-led government over what they see as unfair treatment of their sect.

Tuesday's attacks began when a parked car exploded at a security checkpoint in Mahmoudiya, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the Iraqi capital. The blast killed five people, including two soldiers who were manning the checkpoint, and wounded 15, according to police.

A second car bomb, this one detonated by a suicide attacker, went off near a checkpoint in the northern Baghdad suburb of Taji, killing seven people and wounding 26.

Nasseer Rahman, a 35-year-old teacher, said he was sitting in a minibus waiting to pass the checkpoint when the bomb exploded about 120 meters (yards) away.

"The useless checkpoint was the reason for the high casualties because dozens of cars were backed up in long lines before (it) got hit," he said. "As soon as the blast struck, we got off the minibus and ran to the site of the explosion. We saw several cars on fire and pools of blood, and everybody was screaming for help."

Later in the day, another parked car loaded with explosives blew up in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Shula in northwestern Baghdad, killing five and wounding 15, police said. The blast left several cars charred and mangled.

Medics at a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Elsewhere, gunmen killed two government employees and three guards as they were transporting salaries between oil facilities near Beiji, which is home to Iraq's largest oil refinery, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) north of Baghdad.

Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants, who made off with the money, according to Beiji mayor Abid al-Awadh.

Al-Qaida and other insurgent groups occasionally carry out brazen robberies in order to finance further attacks.

Violence has fallen since the peak of the insurgency in Iraq several years ago, but lethal attacks launched primarily by Sunni extremists still occur frequently. The attacks exacerbate Iraq's struggle to maintain stability amid a series of political crises that have wracked the country since the U.S. military withdrawal in December 2011.

The violence comes amid rising ethnic and sectarian tension following the arrest last month of bodyguards assigned to the Sunni Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi.

The detentions sparked a wave of demonstrations that have swept the Sunni-dominated Anbar province as well as other parts of the country where Iraq's minority Sunnis live.

The protesters, who are rallying against alleged discrimination by the Shiite-led government, demand the release of detainees and want to overturn policies including a tough counterterrorism law that they believe unfairly target their sect.

Al-Maliki earlier this month set up a government committee charged with looking into the protesters' demands. It has focused so far on freeing detainees in an apparent effort to quell the demonstrations.

Deputy Prime Minister Hussain al-Shahristani, one of the prime minister's most trusted political allies, announced Tuesday that more than 1,000 inmates have been set free since the panel began its work.

A delegation of United Nations officials traveled to the Anbar provincial capital of Ramadi on Tuesday to meet with protesters and local officials to better understand their demands, said Eliana Nabaa, a U.N. spokeswoman in Baghdad.

Tiny fossils hold answers to big questions on climate change: Research explores 12,000 year fossil record

Jan. 22, 2013 ? The western Antarctic Peninsula is one of the fastest warming regions on the planet, and the fastest warming part of the Southern Hemisphere.

Scientists have debated the causes of this warming, particularly in light of recent instrumental records of both atmospheric and oceanic warming from the region. As the atmosphere and ocean warm, so the ice sheet (holding an equivalent of 5 metres of global sea level rise, locked up in ice) becomes vulnerable to collapse.

Now research led by Cardiff University published in Nature Geoscience has used a unique 12,000 year long record from microscopic marine algae fossils to trace glacial ice entering the ocean along the western Antarctic Peninsula.

The study has found that the atmosphere had a more significant impact on warming along the western Antarctic Peninsula than oceanic circulation in the late Holocene (from 3500-250 years ago).

This was not the case prior to 3500 years ago, and is not the case in the modern environment. The study has also shown that this late Holocene atmospheric warming was cyclic (400-500 year long cycles) and linked to the increasing strength of the El Ni?o -- Southern Oscillation phenomenon (a climate pattern centred in the low latitude Pacific Ocean) demonstrating an equatorial influence on high latitude climate.

Dr Jennifer Pike, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences said: "Our research is helping to understand the past dynamic behaviour of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet. The implications of our findings are that the modern observations of ocean-driven warming along the western Antarctic Peninsula need to be considered as part of a natural centennial timescale cycle of climate variability, and that in order to understand climate change along the Antarctic Peninsula, we need to understand the broader climate connections with the rest of the planet."

Ice derived from land has a very distinctive ratio of oxygen isotopes. This research is the highest resolution application in coastal Antarctic marine sediments of a technique to measure the oxygen isotope ratios of microscopic marine algae fossils (diatom silica). When a large amount of glacial ice is discharged into the coastal ocean, this alters the oxygen isotope ratio of the sea water that the marine algae are living in. This creates a clear imprint in the fossils that reveals the environmental conditions of the time. The scientists used the oxygen isotope ratio of the fossils to reconstruct the amount of glacial ice entering the coastal ocean in the past 12,000 years, and to determine whether the variations in the amount of ice being discharged were the result of changes in the ocean or atmospheric environment.

Professor Melanie Leng, from the British Geological Survey and Chair of Isotope Geosciences in the Department of Geology, University of Leicester, said: "Technologically the analysis of the oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica is extremely difficult, the British Geological Survey is one of a very few research organisations in the world that can undertake this type of analysis. For this research project the methodology has been developed over the last five years with the specific aim of investigating the different amounts of melting in the polar regions. It's fair to say we are world leading pioneers in this technique."

The research is co-authored with Cardiff University by the universities of Nottingham, Leicester and the British Geological Survey and was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
