Kings banish forward Cousins after trade demand (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Sacramento Kings have suspended DeMarcus Cousins after the temperamental power forward demanded a trade, the team said on Sunday.

Cousins did not appear for the Kings in their 96-80 victory over the New Orleans Hornets and coach Paul Westphal revealed prior to the game that the player had been sent home.

"DeMarcus Cousins has demanded to be traded. In the best interest of our team as we go forward, he has been directed by me, with the support of management, to stay home from the New Orleans game tonight (Sunday)," Westphal said in a statement.

"When a player continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling (or) unable to embrace travelling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely."

Sacramento's next game is at Memphis on Tuesday and the team have made no mention on the likelihood of Cousins' availability for that contest.

The Kings selected Cousins as the fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft and while the 21-year-old is clearly a talented prospect, he is viewed as a risk due to a history of clashes with authority and maturity issues.

The 6ft-11in Cousins averaged 14.1 points and 8.7 rebounds during a rookie campaign in which Sacramento won just 24 games. He is averaging 13 points and 11.3 rebounds in four games this season.
