Palm Harbor Personal Trainer-Finding the strength succeed ...

Hello fitness friends! :)
I have a lot of things that I attribute to success when it comes to reaching your fitness goals however, among the most important is the pure and deep desire from within to make it happen for YOU! Not for anyone else. You see, when external reasons or other people are your fuel for trying to change yourself? this is destined for failure. It may temporarily produce action or results but long-term, it will wreck you because you are not doing it for the right reasons.

It is ok to have dates or occasions to strive for but I believe the MOST important thing is to hold a desire within to achieve a healthy and balanced lifestyle. No gimmicks, games or people toying with your emotions. Just YOU trying to live a balanced and healthy life!

The best way to do this friends is to just ACT. So many times, I hear people mention all of the ?things? they need to begin. This just is not so! All you need is a pair of shoes and the clothes on your back to begin! In fact, it is like this for MANY things in life.

When I started my journey, I had NOTHING. I was in a VERY abusive relationship, no gym membership and I knew nothing about nutrition! I managed to learn and grow along the way. When I met my hubby he instilled lots of knowledge and fitness tips into my repertoire.
(Needless to say: I ditched the guy that did not deserve me along the way!)

You see, achieving balanced health means physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you neglect one of these? some part of your life will suffer because they are all tied together.

Start to seek the deeper reasons for getting healthy and fit. Look at your life and write out your physical goals and life goals. Slowly but surely, like piecing together a puzzle? you will find the right fit.

Go get um friends! I know you can do it!

In health,
Ashley

Use Surveys That Pay To Produce An Internet Cash Stream | Make ...

Article by Melahn Vosika

Is it really possible to make cash from home with surveys that pay?

Why don?t businesses work with unpaid volunteers? Do they really need to extend money to get enough participants? Is it all a scam?

The fact of the matter is that businesses hold thousands of surveys that pay every day in approximately each industry you can think of. They all require this key data: Wal-Mart, Amazon, Ebay and many others consistently offer surveys that pay.

These companies offer surveys for cash because every sample of data they can find is money to them, and if they don?t, their rivals will. And if they want it done right, a cash prize will do it each time.

While the businesses have some overhead associated in giving surveys for pay, the consumer knowledge created more than makes up for it. The aim of the bounty is to ensure truthful answers and ensure that each survey for cash entry will be filled.

In the time prior to the internet, companies conducted intricate market research events, compensating partakers for their time and their travel-related costs. These were expensive events, with allowances into the millions each year, but they still proved to be worthwhile investments for the companies that conducted them.

At present, businesses conserve millions of dollars by conducting surveys that pay on the internet, which has a collateral effect of growing the total paid to each partaker.

If you desire to earn a dependable income from home, surveys that pay are one of the best chances.

There are many hints you have to be familiar with if you desire to make the most out of surveys that pay. You can?t expect to earn a lot of cash straightaway, but these hints will hasten the process.

The main determinant of your success with surveys that pay is your commitment level and your determination. If you want to generate a substantial income, you need to treat surveys that pay like a business or job. Even if the first couple of surveys for cash you take pay you only a couple of dollars, take as many as attainable to get yourself started.

You ought to make a collection of fresh email addresses for the online survey accounts you create. If you don?t, you could see a surveys for money message and think it?s junk or a personal message. You?ll almost certainly discover the top paying surveys as they come in if you use a separate email address.

Make sure you always give authentic responses when you take surveys that pay. If you don?t, you could find yourself blacklisted from upcoming surveys for money. Survey sites that pay frequently compare your responses to identical questions across surveys for symmetry.

From time to time you will find a survey that offers a sweepstakes entrance in place of money. These surveys frequently have few survey-takers, which gives you a considerable chance to win. The majority of partakers bypass sweepstakes entry surveys that pay because they want money for surveys, but you shouldn?t. You can win worthwhile prizes including televisions, appliances, trips, thousands of dollars and more.

Be patient and the bonuses will show up. Certain survey sites that pay hold back the top paying surveys until you?ve completed many lower-paying surveys, so keep going to reach the large payments. If you stick with it and create a history with the survey research company, you may be solicited to an online focus group with a wage of or greater per hour.

The key to surveys that pay is perseverance and dedication. Have at it.

(AP) ? Syrian forces pounded the country's largest city, Aleppo, with military helicopters Saturday to flush out rebel forces in one of the most important battles of the 17-month-old uprising, activists said.

International concern has been mounting over what activists said could be a looming massacre as Syrian troops bombarded the city for the past week, unleashing artillery and strafing it with aircraft. Reinforcements have been pouring into the area in recent days.

Syria's longtime ally, Russia, added to the chorus of alarm Saturday, saying a "tragedy" was looming in Aleppo. But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was unrealistic to expect the Syrian army to stand by while rebels were trying to take over major cities.

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers blind support to the rebels.

With a population of about 3 million, Aleppo is Syria's commercial hub, a key pillar of support for President Bashar Assad's regime.

On Saturday, activists said soldiers were targeting rebel-controlled neighborhoods to crush the opposition forces for good. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fierce fighting has erupted inside those neighborhoods. The group cited its network of sources on the ground in Aleppo.

It has been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government with rebel assaults first on the capital, Damascus, and then on Aleppo, as well as several high-profile defections and a bomb that killed four top security officials.

The government, however, launched a swift counteroffensive and quashed the assault on the capital with a combination of heavy weapons and house-to-house searches. Scores of people were killed. Opposition activists said they expected similar tactics in the coming days to keep Aleppo from falling into rebel hands.

The rebels are outgunned by the Syrian forces, making it difficult for them to hold any territory for long. But the rebels' run on Damascus and Aleppo suggests they could be gaining in power and organization.

Saudi Arabia and other nations have spoken positively of arming the rebels, though no country is known to be doing so.

Saudi King Abdullah announced a national campaign to collect money for "our brothers in Syria" on July 22, and on Saturday the country's press agency said Saudi donations had reached more than $72 million.

On Friday, the U.N.'s outgoing chief observer in Syria said it's just a matter of time before Assad's regime crumbles, but that the violence of the civil war could worsen if Syria uses the full force of its military.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, whose three-month mission in Damascus ended last week, also said the situation in Syria is likely to remain unstable even if Assad's government steps down.

"It's impossible to imagine a future in Syria where the current people in power remain in power. So in that view, it's just a matter of time before this regime collapses. And that is how it's supposed to be," Mood told a news conference in Oslo. That could happen, he said, if more members of the military simultaneously leave the ranks of the government to join the opposition.

Also Friday, Syria's state-run TV said the army freed two Italian electrical engineers, along with two drivers and a Russian expert, who were captured eight days ago by militants.

The Italians were identified as Domenico Tedeschi, 36, and 64-year-old Oriano Cantani. The report said they worked at the Deir Ali power plant, some 18 miles (30 kilometers) south of Damascus.

During a news conference in Damascus, Tedeschi told reporters they were kidnapped by five or six masked men, who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport.

"After a checkpoint, we were stopped by those people whose faces were covered by black masks," he said, adding: "We were very, very afraid, because we don't know anything."

He said the men were robbed and then kept at a small villa. "We think that a Syrian family was forced to keep us," he said, noting that they heard the voices of women and children.

"The Syrian army found us at midday on Friday and they organized everything to release us safe," he said.

There was no immediate comment from Italian officials in Rome.

Dodgers lose 2nd straight since Hanley trade

By R.B. FALLSTROM

AP Sports Writer

updated 5:32 p.m. ET July 26, 2012

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Thus far, Hanley Ramirez hasn't helped the Los Angeles Dodgers gain any wins.

St. Louis had a season-high 18 hits, including three apiece from David Freese and Matt Carpenter, and beat the Dodgers for the second straight game since the Ramirez trade, 7-4 Thursday.

"He definitely makes their lineup that much tougher," Jake Westbrook said. "So, it's good to get a couple wins with him in there It says a lot about our team, how we came back after losing the first one and winning three straight."

Obtained a day earlier from Miami, Ramirez started at third base and batted fifth for the second straight game. He had an infield hit, two walks and a steal, and grounded into a double play. The 2009 NL batting champion is 2 for 6 with three walks and an RBI with his new team, which has lost three in a row overall after a five-game winning streak.

Before dropping the last three, the Dodgers had won eight in a row in the series. They head to San Francisco for a three-game series against the Giants, with a callup to be determined opposing All-Star game starter Matt Cain on Friday night.

"It seems like the momentum we had kind of shifted the other way on us," catcher Matt Treanor said. "I think we're looking forward to leaving town and get fired up for the Giants."

David Freese and Matt Carpenter and Matt Carpenter had three hits each and Matt Holliday hit his 17th homer, his third on a 6-1 homestand.

St. Louis fell behind 4-2 by allowing four runs in the fifth and then scored four in the bottom half. Allen Craig and Tony Cruz each had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who entered six games back in the NL Central.

All week, manager Mike Matheny said he didn't care about the standings. Only about the way the Cardinals played.

Freese left the game with cramping in his right calf for a pinch hitter in the sixth, an inning after getting a bit of medical attention following a two-run single for the go-ahead hit. He was 11 for 20 on the homestand.

Matt Kemp had an infield hit and was 2 for 16 with seven strikeouts and no RBIs in the series. Manager Don Mattingly believed it was simply a matter of tough matchups for his No. 3 hitter.

Though he faced Jake Westbrook for the first time, Kemp is 2 for 17 against Adam Wainwright and 4 for 17 against Kyle Lohse, but with a homer and five RBIs.

"Well, I mean there's other guys in the lineup," Dodgers manager Don Mattinglly said. "Obviously, you like your chances better if Matt's going 8 for 16 with five homers or something, but Matt's going to have his troubles."

Westbrook (9-8) allowed four runs - three earned - and seven hits in seven inning with six strikeouts. The right-hander, who pitched at least seven innings for the third straight start, responded from the Dodgers' four-run fifth, allowing a hit and walk his last two innings.

"I felt really I only made one bad pitch, but it kind of snowballed on me there quick," Westbrook said. "I was able to settle down and our offense came right back."

Mitchell Boggs allowed a hit in the eighth to give him 14 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings, a season best for the team and Jason Motte struck out the side against three pinch hitters in the ninth for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

In his last nine appearances Motte hasn't allowed a run with seven saves, 12 strikeouts and no walks in 10 1-3 innings.

"When these guys are hitting, which we all know they can do, and our pitchers are going out there and executing our pitches, this what we're capable of doing," Motte said. "It's fun to watch."

Chris Capuano (10-6) gave up six runs and 11 hits in 4 1-3 innings, dropping to 0-4 with a 7.90 ERA at 7-year-old Busch Stadium. He gave up two hits the first three innings but retired only three of his last 12 batters.

"Coming out in the fifth I was trying to tell myself `Hey, this is a big inning here, try to shut them down,"' Capuano said. "Especially after we scored for that runs. I just for whatever reason got a little sloppy with my location."

Given a 2-0 lead, Westbrook had thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings and had struck out four in a row before the Dodgers opened the fifth with four singles in five pitches, taking the lead on RBI hits by Juan Rivera and Cruz.

A third run scored on Matt Treanor's infield hit when second baseman Daniel Descalso relayed to third after cutting off the ball, and Freese made an error with wild throw to the plate in an attempt to catch Rivera.

Capuano contributed his third RBI of the year with a sacrifice fly that made it 4-2 with two outs.

St. Louis went ahead in the bottom half on Freese's hit and RBI singles by Craig and Luis Cruz. Holliday homered to straightaway center off Javy Guerra in the sixth.

NOTES:(at) RF Andre Ethier turned a nice double play to avoid further damage in the Cardinals' two-run second when he caught Westbrook's sinking liner and then threw to the plate just in time for Treanor's tag on Carpenter. ... Lance Lynn (12-4, 3.10) is 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA in four career appearances against the Cubs heading into Friday's start in Chicago. ... Lance Berkman missed his second straight start with a bruised right knee but could return Friday. ... Tyler Greene singled in the seventh for his first pinch hit in 13 at-bats this year. ... Carpenter was 3 for 5 after going just 2 for 13 the first six games of the homestand.

7 Things You Don't Know About Moths, But Should

The word "moth" may conjure up images of drab brown insects sticking to your screen door on a summer night. But there's much more to these mostly-nocturnal fliers than meets the eye.

Not only are moths extraordinarily diverse in color, shape and size, said David Moskowitz, a New Jersey entomologist and organizer of the first annual National Moth Week (July 23-29), they also offer a huge array of ecological benefits, from pollinating plants to feeding birds, bats and even people around the globe.

Here, OurAmazingPlanet has rounded up seven fascinating facts about these misunderstood insects:

1. There are more than 11,000 species of moths in the U.S. alone.

Moths outnumber butterflies, their nearest relative, by more than 10 to 1, said Matthew Shepherd, communications director and senior conservation associate at the Xerces Society, a nonprofit organization focused on insect conservation in Portland, Ore. There are upward of 11,000 moth species in the United States alone ? that's more than all the bird and mammal species in North America combined.

Moths can range in size from smaller than a pencil tip to bigger than a songbird. The Atlas Moth, of Southeast Asia, considered the largest in the world, has a wingspan of nearly a foot (30 centimeters) ? more than that of a Baltimore oriole. The Royal Walnut Moth, one of the biggest North American species, has a wingspan of about 4.5 inches (11 cm). [Images: Ancient Moth Colors]

2. Moths make great mimics.

Some moths are notorious for their ability to impersonate other animals. To avoid being eaten, some moths have evolved to look like less palatable insects, such as wasps, tarantulas and the praying mantis. Some moths even mimic bird droppings.

3. Moths are important pollinators.

While some moths, particularly caterpillars such as the corn earworm, are major agricultural pests, many others are important pollinators. "Their hairy bodies make moths great pollinators ? they pick up pollen from any flower they land on," Moskowitz said.?

Moth-pollinated flowers tend to be fragrant and white, such as the yucca plant. Plants with these features allow nocturnal moths to easily find flowers after dark.

Some moths pollinate by day. Hummingbird moths hover in front of flowers and unfurl their long tongues to sip nectar; they feed on a variety of flowers, including bee balm, honeysuckle and verbena.

4. Many adult moths don't eat.

While some moths suck nectar, others don't eat at all. The adult Luna moth, for instance, doesn't even have a mouth. After it emerges from its cocoon, it lives for about a week. Its sole mission in life? To mate and lay eggs.

5. A male moth can smell a female more than 7 miles away.

Though they lack noses, moths are expert sniffers. They detect odor molecules using their antennae instead of through nostrils.? Male giant silkworm moths have elaborate, feather-shaped antennae with hairlike scent receptors that allow them to detect a single molecule of a female moth's sex hormone from 7 miles (11 kilometers) away.

6. They are important food for many animals.

Because of their abundance, moths are major players at the bottom of the food chain. "They're a huge source of food for bats," Shepherd told OurAmazingPlanet.

In fact, some moths have evolved defenses against their winged predators. Tiger moths produce ultrasonic clicking sounds that effectively jam bat sonar, inhibiting the bat's ability to find them.

"Caterpillars are one of the most important things that moths offer in the ecosystem," Shepherd said. "They are food for everything else."

An estimated 95 percent of nesting birds rear their young on insects, and caterpillars make up a significant part of that, Shepherd said.

7. Moths: The next superfood?

In some parts of the world, moths are a major food source for people too. More than 90 percent of people in some African countries eat moth and butterfly caterpillars, according to a 2004 survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Caterpillars are packed with protein and healthy fats, and research shows that 100 grams of these insects provides more than 100 percent of the daily requirement of some vital minerals, such as potassium, calcium, zinc and iron.

Joe Arpaio's (ahem) Legal Scholar Brett "Shut Up" Palmer and ...

Early this morning, I obtained what I was looking for: A legal document highly-valued by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, researched by a scholar of such repute that he's known for telling elected officials to, "Shut up!"

The "scholar" in question is Sergeant Brett Palmer, a supervisor in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious, racial-profilin' Human Smuggling Unit.

No, he doesn't have a law degree, or any legal training to speak of. But he does have a direct line to high MCSO muckety-mucks, including HSU Lieutenant Joe Sousa, Deputy Chief Brian Sands, and Arpaio himself.

See, Palmer took the stand yesterday in Melendres v. Arpaio, the big ACLU lawsuit that's trying to bring Arpaio to heel on his pattern and practice of discriminatory policing. There, Palmer discussed his involvement in a couple of major scandals that have hit the MCSO concerning its Hispanic-hunting ways.

One was a direct embarrassment to Arpaio himself, when Arpaio used misinformation Palmer had forwarded up the chain of command after, Palmer says, Sands asked him to do some "legal research" for the stone-faced deputy chief.

Palmer is the same brain surgeon who participated in a press conference in 2009 where he and other Arpaio employees blasted public officials who had dared to criticize Arpaio's immigration policies.

"We're telling these people in power such as [then Phoenix Mayor] Phil Gordon, [Maricopa County Supervisor] Mary Rose Wilcox and [then Mesa] Police Chief Gascon, shut up!" Palmer practically spat at the time. "They're ignorant. They don't know what it is they're talking about. They don't have their facts straight."

In other words, Palmer isn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer. So what does it say about the guy who asks him to do legal research and passes this "research" along to his boss, the most powerful lawman in the county?

Palmer admitted that he "cut and pasted" info from a website to send to Sands, and the info was, unknown to him at the time, incorrect. The material cited was old, and said that state and local cops have the right to enforce federal immigration statutes without prior approval of the "INS."

That mention of the no-longer-extant INS should have been a tip off for Palmer and his superiors. But they were eager to make the case that local law enforcement has "inherent authority" to question folks about immigration status.

In fact, that is incorrect. As federal Judge G. Murray Snow pointed out in his decision granting Melendres class action status, and as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has held, "Local law enforcement officers...do not have the `inherent authority' to investigate civil immigration violations."

Public Education Is Not a Business ? Diane Ravitch's blog

I have posted a number of comments on the subject of whether, when and how schools are like businesses. This reader says that public education is not a business.

Of course, it is important to understand that the purpose of the accountability measures and the choice policies is to get us all in the habit of thinking we are shoppers, consumers of education services that compete for our children and our dollars.

Parents are supposed to take the school letter grades and go shopping. They are supposed to teach the teacher evaluations and ask for a different teacher. This is supposed to reform schools and make kids smarter somehow. But the real purpose is to get us to view our public services and public goods with a consumer mentality. You can begin to see how nutty this is. Can we shop for a different police department? Can we shop to change our public parks and beaches? No, but we can turn over their management to private vendors. You see, when you start thinking like a consumer, then you forget the distinction between a public service and a business venture.

If they get enough of us to think like this, then we will acquiesce as they privatize everything so we can shop for everything. Or have the illusion of shopping, the illusion of consumer choice. Kind of like when you go to the grocery story and see fifty different cereals and then discover they were all made by the same company.

The problem with this comment is that it is incorrect about the definition of a business. In the second line of the first paragraph, the commenter states:?Schools are a business ? they have employees, labor costs, capital costs, and budgets.?Having employees, labor costs, capital costs, and budgets is not the definition of a business. A well-to-do household could have all those things, and nobody would claim it?s a business. Many charities have those things, and they are not businesses. And of course, governments have those things, and they are not businesses.

The real definition of a business can be found in the last line of the first paragraph, although the commenter just casts it aside:

?The critical difference between schools and what we commonly think of as a business ? Verizon or Citibank ? is that the ultimate purpose of the schools is to provide the service (educate the children) while, for the conventional service business such as Verizon or Citibank, the provision of the service is simply a means to the ultimate purpose of making a profit for the business? owners.?

Yes, businesses? ultimate purpose is to make a profit for the business owners. That?s what makes a business a business. It?s the one integral, universal trait of all businesses. That is the definition of a business: It makes a profit for the business owners. That?s it.

Public Education does not meet the one actual requirement of what a business is.

To say it has a few things in common so it must be the same is just wrong. And to work from that premise leads to more poor logic, misguided decisions, and poor outcomes.

Public Eduction is not a business.

An Interview with Ron Dunning on his Jane Austen Genealogy - Blogs

Some of you may be familiar already with the Ancestry.com Jane Austen Family Tree?created by Ronald Dunning.? It is quite the amazing compilation of ancestors and descendants of ?Dear Aunt Jane? ? a resource for Austen fans and scholars alike the world over.

So we are happy to announce that Mr. Dunning has continued with his Austen genealogical work and his new and improved website is to be ?unveiled? at the Jane Austen Society meeting tomorrow (21 July 2012) at the Chawton House Library [an article about the history of the website will appear in the next JAS Report] -?details of the meeting are here: http://www.janeaustensoci.freeuk.com/pages/AGM_details.htm.

The link to the new website is here: http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/? where you will find new content, the complete transcribed text of the manuscript of Akin to Jane, and links?to the?original RootsWeb site noted above [see below for information on how best to?access the data.]

Ron has been very kind to answer a few of my?questions about how and why he took on this monumental research project, so hope you enjoy learning more about it ? then you must take some time to search the database ? it is great fun to poke around in when you might have an extra minute or two on any given day ? you might even find that somewhere deep in the listings some of your very own relatives share a connection to Jane!

********************************

A hearty welcome to you Ron ? with thanks for sharing with us the history of your website!

JAIV:? What prompted you to get involved with this Austen family research project to begin with??

RD:? I grew up in Toronto, a city, and a wonderful city it is, whose civilised history only goes back for two centuries. All of my grandparents were English, but the thought of having interesting ancestors would have seemed too ridiculous to entertain. My paternal grandmother was the sort who wrote regularly to every English member of her and my grandfather?s families, and was always nattering about their current situations. In 1972, aged 25, I left Toronto to find work as a classical musician, and the idea of going to England, where there would be a ready-made family, was deeply appealing. Just before my departure, my grandmother told me that we had some sort of connection with the Austens, though she didn?t know what.

We must have been almost the only branch of descendants who?d lost sight of it!? I was pleased to be able to tell her, before she died, that Frank Austen [Jane's brother] was her great-great-grandfather.? It was difficult to get much further back than that in the 1970s, so I gave up the search to get on with work, and to raise my own brace of descendants. In 1998 my wife bought a computer for our kids and, Luddite that I am, I grumbled and scowled in the background ? till I thought that I might just see what it?s like.

I was soon drawn back to family history. The kids were old enough that they preferred neglect to parental attention, though we did meet?occasionally?to fight over whose turn it was to use the computer. At the time I thought that it would stand to reason that the Austen genealogy had been exhausted, so for the next five years I worked through the seven non-Austen great-grandparents? lines, and just copied the charts in the backs of Jane Austen biographies.

When that was thoroughly exhausted I was addicted, and needed a fix! Simultaneously it became evident that the authors of the biographies had all copied the family charts from one another, and there was a lot further to go.? In particular they mainly recorded the male lines, dishonouring the women. I?ve found that not just Cassandra Leigh but George Austen too had eminent ancestors, which means that their records go back, potentially, to the beginning of recorded history.

Now I have a lifetime?s supply of fixes, and in retirement, a full time job.? Do not call it a hobby.? And don?t say that I?m obsessed. Oh well, all right, perhaps I am. This study means a lot more to me than just a growing collection of names ? it makes me feel organically connected, not just to the Austen family (and I don?t feel at all proprietorial about Jane) but to the whole of English history.

JAIV: Tell us something about Joan Corder and her manuscript, Akin to Jane ? how and when and where did you first come upon it ? what a find! ? and why did she not publish her research??

RD:? Joan Corder was born and lived through her life in the English county of Suffolk. She served as a young woman, during World War 2, in intelligence as a plotter, then moved back home to look after her widowed mother. She didn?t marry. Over the course of her life she became a distinguished herald and genealogist; Akin to Jane was her first big project.

It was to her enduring disappointment that she couldn?t interest a publisher ? so only two copies of the manuscript were made. One was presented to the Jane Austen Society and can be seen at the Jane Austen?s House Museum at Chawton, where it has been, presumably, consulted by most if not all of Jane Austen?s later biographers.

With use, the manuscript has become increasingly fragile; people still visit the Museum to inspect it. My Austen cousin Patrick Stokes scanned the work to help preserve it for posterity, and it?s his scans that are displayed on the website. The museum curator is pleased that she can now refer interested parties to the web, and retire the original.

[Ron says on the website: ?I would like to acknowledge and thank my Austen cousin, Patrick Stokes, who first brought the manuscript of?Akin to Jane?to my attention, and gave me a copy.?]

Joan Corder

?

JAIV:? What, of all the discoveries in your research, surprised you the most?

RD:? So many discoveries! They constantly amaze, but no longer surprise. ?I?ve been making a list, and intend to write articles about them. Here is a sample and though many of them seem improbable, they are all true.

1.? William IX, Duke of Aquitaine.? William was a leader of the 1101 Crusade.? He is best known today as the earliest troubadour ? a vernacular lyric poet in the Occitan language ? whose work has survived.? Grandfather of Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Jane Austen?s 19th-great-grandfather.
2.? Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales. Shakespeare?s Owen Glendower. Jane?s 13th-great-grandfather.

Owain Glyndwr ? the BBC

3. John King, Bishop of London, from 1611 (the year of the King James Bible) to 1621. John King ordained John Donne. Jane?s? 4th-great-grandfather.

4.? Faith Coghill, the wife of Sir Christopher Wren. The? 1st cousin once removed of George Austen.

5. Lizzie Throckmorton, the wife of Sir Walter Raleigh. A distant cousin of Cassandra Leigh.

Elizabeth Throckmorton

6.? Katherine Leigh, the wife of Robert Catesby, the Gunpowder plotter, another distant cousin.

7.? Both of Jane?s parents were descended from royalty. Cassandra was descended from John of Gaunt, the son of Edward III, so every previous English king, back to William the Conqueror, and some beyond, was her ancestor.? For George we have to go back two generations further, to Edward I.

8.? Some Scottish royalty ? the real-life Duncan I of Scotland who was either murdered by his cousin, the real-life Macbeth, or killed in battle against him.? Macbeth, as we know, succeeded him as King.? Duncan was Jane?s 21st-great-grandfather.

9.? By the way, we all know from Jane?s juvenilia that she ?preferred? Mary Queen of Scots to Queen Elizabeth. Well ? not only was she related to both, but in Jane Austen?s Sailor Brothers she is quoted favourably comparing her brother Frank with Queen Elizabeth.

Cassandra Austen?s Mary Queen of Scots ? The History of England

JAIV:? This is all wonderful!?
But I must ask, any real gossip ? things hidden for generations?

RD:? Ooh ? I?d be banished from the family if I revealed any of those!

JAIV: Oh, but the story of Elizabeth and Herbert is quite an interesting one! All hidden from the family and worthy of a Victorian novel! ?? or at least akin to the writers of Victorian novels, as the lives of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins can attest! [see below for the link!]

JAIV:? Where do you go from here??

RD:? I began the web project thinking that I would be producing a revision of Akin to Jane , but it eventually became obvious that the plan was unworkable. I want the reader to be drawn to my research, and not to think that Joan Corder?s work was the end of it. She managed to record a little over 300 of George and Cassandra Austen?s descendants, and gave ancestors no attention. My genealogical database contains more than 1200 descendants ? that is, another 900 ? and another ten thousand people, who include ancestors, collateral families, and families of social connections. The address of that, by the way, is http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~janeausten.

There is a link beneath each individual in Akin to Jane to that database, but in the long run I plan to organise things better. I?ll spend next winter learning the html to create a proper design (you won?t know it, but the current one is improper), and intend to do wondrous things with a sidebar. That will take care of technicalities. I have only just begun thinking beyond the current content, and have decided that I will add more original family history source material. I believe that one can jinx plans by talking about them too soon, so I?ll do that when I know that the material can be used.

JAIV:? Is there a book in the works?

RD: I?m sorry. No book. Articles, yes. Though I?ve really enjoyed building the Jane Austen?s Family website, it has absorbed an immense amount of time ? time taken away from research, my first love.

?******************************************************?

Thank you Ron for joining us here today! [well, really you are at the JAS meeting at the Chawton House Library, and I am here in Vermont, but we can pretend, can?t we?]?- it has been delightful getting to know you via emails! and I very much?appreciate you sharing all this with us. What a gift of research you have given the Jane Austen world?

Now Dear Readers, it is time for you to journey through these ancestry files, both those of Joan Corder?s Akin to Jane manuscript, now transcribed for all to see on the website, as well as the expanded genealogical research at the Ancestry.com site that Ron has lovingly put together over these past how many years?! ? Ron makes it clear that this is still a work in progress [isn?t everything?] and he will continue to make changes to the set-up and continuously add content.? But it is best to just dive in and see all that is there ? [as an aside, so please forgive the intrusion,?I must say that I put in several of my family names (both my parents were born in England, so I knew there was a chance of some connection somewhere), and find that the mother of Sir Christopher Wren has my maiden name, and his wife, mentioned above [Faith Coghill] was a direct cousin to George Austen! ? now I have some serious sleuthing to do to find the exact connection ? but I have been quite annoying to friends and family these past few days since my discovery ? and not sure in any given minute whether to sit down and write a Novel, or get out my drafting table and design a Cathedral ? this genealogy stuff can be quite daunting!]

So back to the matter at hand ? let?s head into the Austen genealogy: to begin, go first to the main page: where you will see these links:

1. Akin to Jane ? Joan Corder?s original and transcribed manuscript ? click on this and you will find these links:

Akin to Jane title page

  • Jane Austen?s Family- Index of Names, and Lists: Corder?s notes on the Austen family, indexed by Austen family members, all surnames of the extended family ? you will find links to:

1.? Jane?s family and their descendants: George and Cassandra Austen; James Austen; George Austen; Edward Austen, later Knight; Henry Thomas Austen; Cassandra Elizabeth Austen; Francis William Austen; Jane Austen; and Charles John Austen

2. ?Index of people by surname: Austen Family; Austen-Leigh; Bradford, Hill and Hubback; Knatchbull; Knight; Lefroy and Purvis; and Rice

  • Highlights page ? oh! much here and much more to be added:

?There is good reason for the general reader to delve into this manuscript. One of Joan Corder?s informants, Miss Marcia Rice, who was 84 in 1954 when the work was written, was the granddaughter of Edward Knight?s daughter Elizabeth, and her husband Edward Royd Rice. Miss Rice wrote extensive memoirs of her family, which Joan Corder copied. Her recollections of her distant childhood were refracted through the most rosy of tinted spectacles; few could read those for her grandmother without needing the discreet use of a tissue. Here is a direct link to Elizabeth.

Please don?t stop with Elizabeth ? Miss Rice didn?t. She left a wonderful record immortalising her entire Rice family, from aunts who could be quirky or intellectual, to uncles who could be courageous or reckless. For many of them there are links in the text to portraits. Be sure not to neglect reading Miss Rice?s personal memories, on page 115; and those following, on her great-aunt Marianne Knight.? ?

  • Heraldry ? Eleven Coats of Arms: these are worthy of a website all their own!

  • Author?s and Editor?s Notes: notes from both Corder and Dunning with explanations on how to use the Akin to Jane database and links to Dunning?s Roots Web database.

Now the fun part: you really do need to explore ? but I shall give you this start ? the wonderful story noted on the ?Highlights Page??above of Elizabeth Austen [later Knight], daughter of Jane Austen?s brother Edward, from her grand-daughter Marcia Alice Rice, as written for Joan Corder in 1953:

http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/akin-to-jane/text/edward/051a.html

and then this quite romantic tale?that I mentioned above of another?Elizabeth and her husband Herbert: Herbert was the last?child of?Fanny Catherine Austen Knight Knatchbull?(Jane Austen?s favorite niece ? quite the mouthful! ? and later on they added Hugessen to the name!) -? here we have a tale of a secret marriage, he and his wife Elizabeth?living under an assumed name, Herbert never telling his mother, never telling his colleagues in Parliament, having many children ? all right out of a Victorian novel! : you can find it here on the ancestry.com website:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=janeausten&id=I3046

and you can read Ron?s take on the story and his research here:

So just dig around ? click on any link of interest ? there are treasures to be discovered lurking behind those links! ? whatever would Jane Austen make of all this do you think? ? would she be absolutely appalled to discover she was related to Queen Elizabeth?? I now wonder after all if even I am related to Queen Elizabeth ? and maybe you are too!

If you have any questions for Ron, please leave a comment here ? he is happy?to respond to any queries or suggestions?
