Today, NHK World reported on japanese health officials issuing a warning about possible cancerous asbestos inhalation, during debris cleaning in earthquake and tsunami hit areas of T?hoku.
I am sorry, but seriously? You?ve got to be kidding me, that the bureaucratic apparatus of Japan an taken amazing 18 months to acknowledge a potential hazard, which has been carefully mentioned by other sources very early on. I am saddened by the fact, that these warnings haven?t been issued until two men died of mesothelioma ? asbestos related lung-cancer ? from working in the aftermath of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe, 1995. Even more so, these two men have died in 2011, but the labor ministry has taken until last June to even recognize their deaths as asbestos-related.

In history, Japan once has been one of the biggest importers of asbestos containing materials worldwide, where it had been widely used in construction projects of the 1960s. In 1974 the production of asbestos fibers peaked in Japan, until it slowly decreased in the 1990s. Followed by a public scandal in 2005 asbestos had been mostly banned as a construction material.
At last, there?s a good thing about the news on NHK World, or Japan Times, as they show that the Japanese government is, albeit as slowly as a Brachiosaurus, starting to change its course on handling asbestos related diseases.
