Five Bangladeshi sentenced to death for Saudi diplomat killing

DHAKA (Reuters) - A Bangladeshi court sentenced five members of a gang to death on Sunday for killing a Saudi Arabian diplomat in the capital Dhaka last March, court officials said.

Khalaf Ali, 45, a second secretary at his embassy, was shot at night near the embassy in Dhaka's diplomatic zone, raising an alarm over the first slaying of a diplomat in the country.

Judge Mohammad Motahar Hossain of the quick-trial court issued the verdict for the five men who police said shot Ali while trying to rob him. One of the accused remains on the run from police.

Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh have close ties, with a large number of Bangladeshis employed in the oil-rich kingdom. In recent years, the embassy has tightened visa rules to stop an influx of people with forged documents.

Relations between the two countries were strained in October 2011, when Saudi authorities executed eight Bangladeshi workers in public for their alleged involvement in an armed robbery in which an Egyptian security guard was killed.

Yemen: Al-Qaida offers bounty for US ambassador

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

An audio produced by the group's media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday said it offered three kilograms of gold, worth $160,000, for killing the ambassador.

The group said it will pay 5 million Yemeni riyals ($23,000) to anyone who kills an American soldier inside Yemen.

It said the offer is valid for six months.

The bounties were set to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad," the statement said.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa did not respond to an Associated Press phone call asking for comment.

Washington considers al-Qaida in Yemen to be the group's most dangerous branch.

The group overran entire towns and villages last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country's longtime ruler. Backed by the U.S. military experts based at a southern air base, Yemen's army was able to regain control of the southern region, but al-Qaida militants continue to launch deadly attacks on security forces that have killed hundreds.

In the capital, Sanaa, security officials said two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed two intelligence officers early Sunday as they were leaving a downtown security facility. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said all intelligence and security officers have been instructed to take precautionary measures outside working hours.

The government blames al-Qaida for the killing of several senior military and intelligence officials this year mainly by gunmen on motorbikes.

The officials said security authorities in Sanaa have launched a campaign against motorcyclists suspected of involvement in these attacks or other crimes, arresting about 200 for questioning for violations, including driving motorcycles without license plates.

2012 predictions in technology ? psychic or science? | Skeptoid

At year?s end it is kind of skeptical tradition to go over various psychic predictions for that year. Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast does it, and invariably these predictions are either super-wrong or the prediction was so vague to begin with that one can always count a ?hit?. Furthermore, when psychics invent a lot of predictions over multiple years, then by chance one will be correct eventually. Helped by confirmation bias?(1), this ensures their ?success? and popularity.

But psychics are not the only ones making predictions. There are tons of so-called and self-proclaimed ?trend watchers?, ?marketing experts? and other ?technical guru?s? who also do their best to ?predict? the coming year. Sometimes their predictions are based on the best of available knowledge, but in my opinion their predictions are still mostly guesses.

I don?t really know if Mark Anderson from Strategic News Service is one of them. An old school friend, now Professor at Vlerick Business School, brought him to my attention. My skeptical senses started to tingle at the description on their website of ?most accurate predictive letter in computing?, with claims of interaction with global thought leaders like Bill Gates. That smells a little fishy to me.

But at least he is honest enough to leave his past predictions online (and for free, not behind a pay wall), so let?s judge on merits. I will score his Top 10 predictions for 2012, as published in December of 2011. I will judge ?specifics? of predictions (how vague), with each time a small comment to see if it?s a hit or a miss.

Theme for the Year [2012]: ?Integrating Everything?

No problem here. Vague enough that one can claim to be correct, but also not very difficult to predict.

I. TV Becomes the New Center of Gravity in the tech universe, as all?other devices find their niches in the TV galaxy.

Specific: low. Although the accompanying text mentions Microsoft and Apple, it remains very generic. Small risk taken by mentioning TV devices, but sufficiently padded by referring to other devices who will stream TV content.

Miss. Apple didn?t bring out their Apple TV version hinted at in the biography of the late Steve Jobs. Microsoft?s Kinect is a moderate success (but not completely), but that was already the case in 2011. Not very good as a prediction then. 0 %.

II. 2012 Will See Tectonic Shifts in Phone Markets.

This one was split up in three different predictions: Nokia failing and the role of Asian manufacturers, unlicensed Android versions, domination of cellphone market by smartphones.

Specific: overall rather specific predictions, mentioning several companies by name. Furthermore, in comparison with the previous prediction, no weasel words like ?if? and ?qualified? success.

Partial hit, but not very impressive. Nokia did indeed continue to lose market share, and Android gained. But as clear from this graph?from 2011, that was already the case before, so not impressive as a prediction. The reference to unlicensed Android versions seems in my opinion a miss (although they exist), and the smartphone dominating the cellphone market is a hit, although 46% is not really ?dominating?. 50% but points lost on added value of prediction.

?III. Clouds Are for Consumers (and Startups).

Specific: rather low, as there are no specific companies mentioned. Extra points however for mentioning that (bigger) enterprises will stay away from clouds.

Although it is not really my area of expertise, I consider this a hit. After some research and anecdotical evidence, it seems indeed that smaller companies (but not only startups) are considering or actually moving into the cloud, but bigger companies not yet, for the reasons mentioned by Anderson. 100 %.

IV. Security Splits the Tech World in Two, finally getting Front of Mind?(and wallet) attention from CEOs

Specific: vague and not really understandable paragraph about companies owning intellectual property rights going after patent infringers. No actual companies or technology areas mentioned.

Somewhat a hit, as 2012 saw a continuation of various court battles between for instance the different mobile tech firms. Some concluded with some hefty verdicts (fines and interdictions), but no prediction of that, only of increasing spending on those patent defenses. 75% with points lost on failing to see the (intermediate) conclusion of several court battles.

?V. SIRI [Apple iOS virtual assistant] Stuns the World.

Specific: rather vague. Although the title suggests a success for Siri, the actual explanation shows a horde of copycats arriving, with reference to ?niches?, whatever that means.

I chalk this one up as a fail. Siri is impressive and indeed a number of copies have appeared that seem to perform ok. I do not get the impression this is a big game changer that got a lot of media attention. They are still in the phase of ?gimmick? that is nice to show off, but nothing more. 0%

?VI. We Enter the Amazing World of Dave and HAL, as Voice Recognition?comes of age.

Specific: a bit vague by referring to several companies and applications. However, rather specific on the part of technology, so overall ok.

Miss. Although more and more available, the ending statement ?By the end of this year, talking to machines in a normal voice will not seem?unusual, nor be the cause of unending frustration? is simply wrong. Anyone who disagrees may come to my house and test it on our new car. 0%.

VII. E-Readers Prosper, but Pads Continue to Dominate the CarryAlongMarket.

Specific: ok, mentioning specific technologies, products and companies.

Partial hit. E-readers have become more popular (and in my opinion rightly so), and Amazon indeed made it difficult for Apple (though not only with their Fire line). However, Apple did not make its iPads cheaper, it produced a smaller one to compete with other companies (like Samsung) on the smaller tablet market. Failing to see this specific evolution, and the rise of smaller Android tables, is responsible for only a final score of 50%. And even that is?probably too generous.

VIII. The Consumption World Explodes.

Specific: very low. A lot of potential evolution gets thrown out, ?new devices, new?content, new bundles, new connection techniques, new distribution channels,?new aggregators, new pads, new phones, ?? and on and on.

I count this as a miss. Yes, some new (and impressive) smartphones appeared, and the internet continued to evolve. But given the failure of Facebook?s IPO (in contrast to ?new consumption models riding on social networks?) we are not (yet?) in an exploding consumption world. The mentioned technologies are so vague, and really carpet bomb the entire technology spectrum, that I fail to be impressed. 0%.

IX. Governments and Corporations Focus on IP as though it were their?most prized asset. It is.

Specific: rather specific, mentioning that nations would get involved defending copyright infringement.

This is a partial hit. Although indeed governments have pushed for more strict rules, both in the US and in Europe, it is not considered ?act of military aggression?. Also, several efforts were stricken down by amazing citizen efforts (mailing parliaments and congress etc), so failing to foresee that specific evolution. 40%, as there are some correct references to being unable to track actual infringements (true but nothing new).

X. Amazon Gets It All.

Specific: very specific, mentioning Amazon and different products / content that it will deliver. ?Amazon will have a terrific year?.

I?m a bit torn to give this a full hit. Yes, Amazon did not do bad, given the correct economic situation. Especially on cloud services (not explicitly mentioned by Anderson), e-books and content did Amazon do quite well. On the other hand, Q3 sales were down, and there was less profit. Anderson references ?long-lived, profitable business lines?, but seems to be overshooting it. Nevertheless 70% for making specific predictions, which were true in several cases.

Conclusion: Overall there is a 38,5% hit rate. That is not bad, but some of these predictions were not hard to foresee. Moreover, given a lot of vague or carpet-bombing approaches (for which I subtracted points), I?m really not convinced by their motto ?most accurate predictive? newsletter. I do appreciate some very specific predictions (where it is a lot easier to be wrong), and of course keeping these predictions available for free, and not behind the very expensive pay wall.

Anderson does not seem to be in the same range as the psychics, but my first reaction seems justified nevertheless. There are some parallels with psychic predictions. On the other hand, he is considered a sort of ?technology guru?. As my friend pointed out in a discussion over Twitter, he?s more of a ?market maker?. There is a chance that certain evolutions will happen because he mentions them (assuming he really has the high-profile audience he claims). But I found him lacking on several critical points, or being too optimistic (e.g. on voice recognition). All in all, in my opinion, not worth the full subscription price of $ 200 per quarter.

Since the predictions of 2013 are still behind the pay wall, we?ll have to wait and see next year what he predicted. In any case, dear reader, my wishes are certain and not open to interpretation: I wish you all the best, and hope you have a good one.

Costa Phillippou gets big win as Tim Boetsch deals with rough night at UFC 155

Costa Philippou wasn't even supposed to be fighting at UFC 155. It was supposed to be Chris Weidman, Philippou's teammate, taking on Tim Boetsch. It was supposed to be a fight that decided a potential contender for Anderson Silva's bout. But in MMA, things don't always work out like they are supposed to, and Philippou walked away with a win at UFC 155.

Philippou stepped in to fight Boetsch after Weidman was injured in training camp. Boetsch took an early lead with clinch work and takedowns in the first round, but between rounds he talked about an injury that was bothering him. It got worse for Boetsch in the second round, as a large cut opened in his forehead and he was poked in the eye.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

With his eye swelling and blood covering his face, Boetsch tried to deal with Philippou's striking. Boetsch attempted takedowns, but couldn't hold off Philippou, who finished the fight at 2:11 in the third round.

After the fight, Philippou sent this tweet that said it all.

Though he's now 12-2 and has five straight wins in the UFC, Philippou has flown under the radar among middleweights. It will be hard to ignore him after he took advantage of this opportunity at UFC 155.

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, still won't be stealthy

Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of 2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result.

Choosing Between Computer Science and Information Technology ...

What Computer Science Engineering Encompasses:

Computer Science is a branch of engineering which is also a subset of electronic engineering. Computer software engineers design, develop, and test software. There are software engineers who design, construct, and maintain computer programs for companies and some of them sets up networks such as "intranets" for companies. Computer software engineers can also work in application design which includes designing or coding new programs and applications to meet the needs of a business or individual.

A computer engineer will be exposed to electronic engineering, software designs, and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering.

Computer engineers are exposed to many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design, writing software and firmware for embedded microcontrollers, designing VLSI chips, designing operating systems.

In computer Science engineering, there are various subjects which the students would be exposed to. Some of the subjects that are included as a part of the syllabus are operating systems, Microprocessor, Database Management Systems, Data Structures, C programming language, Java programming language, Software engineering, C++ programming, Unix operating systems, Networking, Computer Graphics, Computer architecture etc.

Difference between Computer Science engineering and Information Science engineering

The study of computer science can range from the theoretical studies of algorithms to the practical issues that come with the use of computing systems. Studies in computer science usually focus on software design and creation, computational theory, computer design, and involve a great deal of mathematics.

Mathematics and algorithms are very dominant across Computer Science programs and courses. A typical program in Computer Science will include Programming principles, Programming paradigms, Data structures, Algorithms, Computer architecture, Logic and computation, and Mathematics

Individuals with Computer Science Degrees have a variety of options when it comes to choosing their career track. Most of the professionals in this field obtain jobs that deal with designing software, developing websites, designing computers or providing maintenance to computing systems and hardware.

Information technology is a branch of engineering which deals with using computers and telecommunications to send, receive, and store information i.e. uses electronic computers and computer software to store, protect, process, transmit and securely retrieve data. This is a comparatively a new field that has developed over the past years and the companies now depend heavily on information technology to function. Studies in Information technology focus on system analysis, software management and networking, information assurance, and informatics. Programs in this area train students to manage networks efficiently. A program in Information Technology also includes Project management, Problem solving, Policy consultation, Technology research methods, and IT plan development.

Information Technology professionals are employed as network administrators, database administrators, systems administrators, telecommunications specialists, and network engineers. A degree in Information Technology allows individuals to enter the same job market as individuals with Computer Science degrees, but also provides them with the option of working with networks and telecommunications.

Companies are open to hiring students of both fields. Hence, the students can choose a field which captures your interests.

Virurl Integrates RSS Into Its Sponsored Content Platform

virurl-logoVirurl has launched a new feature that it says will make it even easier for publishers to promote articles and videos through its platform. The feature is called RSS Ads, and it offers another way to convert articles into advertising ? when a new article gets posted to a publisher's RSS feed, it automatically becomes an ad, which can then be promoted through the content widget displayed on Virurl's partner sites, as well as through the social influencers who get paid to share Virurl content. In the press release announcing the new feature, co-founder and CEO Francisco Diaz-Mitom said that it allows advertisers to "stay focused on what they do best ? creating valuable content." The company also argues that by allowing publishers to promote, more content, it will increase clickthrough rates.

Texas Tornado 2012: Christmas Storms Slam Gulf Coast, Damage Louisiana And Oklahoma

MOBILE, Ala. ? A Christmas Day twister outbreak left damage across the Deep South while holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled sometimes treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions.

Conditions were volatile throughout the afternoon and into the night with tornado warnings in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The storms were blamed for two deaths, several injuries, and left homes from Louisiana to Alabama damaged.

In Mobile, Ala., a tornado or high winds damaged homes and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall, said Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Mobile County Commission. WALA-TV's tower camera captured a large funnel cloud headed toward downtown.

"We haven't verified what it was, but we have an area that we heard has damage to homes," she said.

Meanwhile, blizzard conditions were hitting the nation's midsection.

Earlier in the day, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 4 to 7 inches of snow.

No injuries were confirmed immediately, but fire crews were still making door-to-door checks in the hardest hit areas of Mobile. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, which was providing storm updates through Twitter, said Murphy High School was damaged and that there was a gas leak at a nearby apartment building.

An apparent tornado caused damage in the west Alabama town of Grove Hill, located about 80 miles north of Mobile.

Mary Cartright said she was working at the Fast Track convenience store in the town on Christmas evening when the wind started howling and the lights flickered, knocking out the store's computerized cash registers.

"We've had some pretty heavy weather," said Cartright in a phone interview. "Our cash registers are down so our doors are closed."

Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana's Rapides Parish but there were no injuries reported and crews were cutting trees out of roadways to get to people in their homes, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Carnline. Near McNeill, Miss., a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area, which was expected to be dealing with the same storm system on Wednesday. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least three tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service. Tornado watches were in effect across southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

More than 400 flights nationwide were canceled by the evening, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled into and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport that got a few inches of snow.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In Louisiana, quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in the western part of the state and a WDSU viewer sent a photo to the TV station of what appeared to be a waterspout around the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. There were no reports of crashes or damage.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32.

In Mobile, a large section of the roof on the Trinity Episcopal Church is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone, said Scott Rye, a senior warden at the church in the Midtown section of the city.

On Christmas Eve, the church with about 500 members, was crowded for services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," Rye said.

The church finished a $1 million-plus renovation campaign in June 2011, which required the closure of the historic sanctuary for more than a year.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development has awarded $1.03 million in loans that will help small businesses create 233 jobs statewide and retain another 472 jobs.

In all, 31 Minnesota businesses, including STAFF Manufacturing in Lester Prairie, will receive loans. The loans were awarded under the agency?s State Small Business Credit Initiative, which uses federal funding to stimulate private-sector lending that enables small manufacturers and other businesses to expand. DEED officials estimate the loans will leverage an additional $15.89 million in private capital.

U.S. Navy SEAL commander dies in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior member of the U.S. Navy's elite SEAL unit has died in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said on Sunday, and media reports said the death was a possible suicide.

Commander Job Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, died on Saturday of a non-combat related injury in central Afghanistan's Uruzgan Province, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"This incident is currently under investigation," it said.

Price was assigned to a Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the statement said.

NBC News and CNN quoted unnamed military officials as saying that the death was being looked at as a possible suicide.

Lieutenant David Lloyd, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which comprises the four SEAL teams on the U.S. East Coast, declined to comment on the cause of death, saying it was under investigation.

Price was married and had a daughter. He had been a naval officer since May 1993, Lloyd said.

Captain Robert Smith, the Group Two commander, said in a statement: "The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate. We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving.

"As we mourn the loss and honour the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission."

SEAL is an acronym for sea, air, land.

B2B Social Media Marketing - Business 2 Community

The Social Window?.

If you ran a business and had a veritable window into people?s souls, especially those who you wanted to do business with, would you ignore it?

B2B Marketers ? You?ll really feel the love if you go beyond simply marketing on social media and statrt lsitening to it.

Not if you wanted your business to succeed, yet that?s exactly what appears to be standard operating procedure for many of the country?s execs operating in the B2B space.

The tool? Social media, and according to the 2012 Harris Interactive 2012 Zeno Digital Readiness Survey, that?s precisely how a large minority of B2B decision makers use social media?. or don?t use it, if the survey is an accurate reflection of their behavior.

The survey discovered that while a majority of execs do take social media into account when making their business decisions, it?s a much smaller percentage than the number many people would guess, given the importance social media occupies in society today. Moreover, the percentage that never make a move without consulting their Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Pinterest oracle is but 21%.

Consider this:

  • There are over 168 million U.S. Facebook users, equating to over 73% of the Internet-using population, and according to Facebook, they average over 40 minutes a day on the site.
  • U.S. Twitter users topped 100 million for the first time in 2012, and Twitter using brands report getting twice the number of inbound leads as those that don?t.
  • 53% of B2B companies use Twitter.
  • 55% of B2B buyers use social media to help make purchase decisions.
  • 82% of buyers trust a brand more if its CEO is active on social media, yet midway through 2012, only 30% of CEOs are active on social networks of any stripe. (BusinessInsider)

It seems that using social media as a decision making tool among B2B brands? decision makers is far less common than one might have thought, even if their companies have a social media presence. While some companies, like eBay, have wholly embraced social media as a powerful decision making tool, even implementing real time listening posts to monitor social traffic and conversations, others have stopped at using social media for marketing only.

The Better Half?

As a marketing company we certainly support social media marketing, however companies that stop there are leaving much on the table. Social media represents the first time that businesses have the ability to not only affect a behavior change, through social media marketing, but also to monitor and correct their efforts in real time.

Brands that don?t do that are missing half the equation. You?re staring an opportunity to monitor your market?s trends, attitudes, and opinions right in the face. As social has grown increasingly mobile recently (According to Hubspot, 49% of smartphone owners use them for social networking) the real time feedback aspect of social media as a way to shape your marketing efforts has grown even more powerful.

Most decision makers are loathe to even take a shower without their mobile device, so this is definitely a trend not to be ignored. According to Techcrunch 22% of LinkedIn?s usres are now mobile, and that number is rising. Given LinkedIn is a B2B marketer?s paradise, how their user base acts definitely bears watching. Since mobile usders get things in near real time, the feedback you?ll get is that much more valuable.

The Social Register?

The bottom line; embrace not just social media marketing, but social media monitoring, too. Watch your blog comments, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn regularly. More to the point, get what they?re telling you, and act on it quickly. Your bottom line will go nowhere but up. Oh, and you C-suiters out there, get your butts using LinkedIn and Twitter, stat!

Please share this using the convenient little buttons? Thank You!

Colombian peace talks said to advance amid many challenges

HAVANA (Reuters) - Talks between the Colombian government and Marxist-led FARC rebels to end their bloody, half-century-long conflict have made progress, but broad areas of disagreement lie ahead, the two sides said on Friday as they headed into a holiday break.

Lead government negotiator Humberto de la Calle, speaking at the conclusion of the second round of meetings, said the two sides had agreed on some "unprecedented mechanisms" for civic input into the peace process.

"Since November 19 when we formally began, we've had 21 sessions and more than 100 hours of intense work, and concrete advances, all as expected," said de la Calle, who read a statement but did not take questions.

The two sides are trying to end a war that dates to 1964 when the FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, was formed as a communist agrarian movement to end the country's long history of social inequality.

Tens of thousands of people have died and millions have been displaced in South America's last Marxist-led armed rebellion, a vestige of the Cold War.

They said in a joint communiqu? on Friday the talks, which will resume in Havana on January 14, were being held "in an atmosphere of respect and constructive spirit."

But the comments of de la Calle and, in a separate press conference, the rebels, signaled the differences to be overcome.

De La Calle said the goal was to convert the illegal guerrilla group into a legitimate political organization, while maintaining the country's economic and social models.

"They don't have to abandon their ideology and the government does not have to change its model of society," said the former vice president.

"We are not negotiating the development model of Colombia nor the democratic system of the government."

CHANGES NEEDED 'WITHOUT A DOUBT'

But lead FARC negotiator Ivan Marquez, speaking later, said achieving peace "without a doubt requires changes to the model of society and the anti-democratic political system that in the end is responsible for shameful inequality and exclusion that characterize the Colombian regime."

"A badly constructed peace is worse than a war," said the bearded, bespectacled Marquez.

Three previous peace attempts have failed, but Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos hopes a decade-long, U.S.-backed offensive has weakened the rebels enough that they will want to end the fighting on the best possible terms.

If peace is not achieved, the FARC still has 9,000 troops that can keep inflicting damage on the continent's fourth-largest economy.

The negotiations, which are being held in a Havana convention center in the ritziest part of the Cuban capital, have begun with the topic of rural development, the first of six points to be addressed.

Others range from the rebels' involvement in the illicit drug trade to their future political participation.

De la Calle said Colombians, whose opinions are being sought online and in public forums, had provided nearly 3,000 suggestions to aid the peace process, some of which were being closely studied.

He said negotiators were also receiving ideas from development experts and peasants about how to improve life for the rural poor in Colombia.

The FARC's Tanja Nijmeijer, a Dutch national, said the rebels had received more than 250,000 suggestions from Colombians on its websites.

When the talks began in November, the FARC declared a unilateral ceasefire until January 20 and complained this week that the government had not joined it in laying down arms.

Instead, the government has kept up its offensive, killing at least 20 FARC guerrillas in one attack earlier this month.

"The continuation of the fighting severely affects the progress of the Havana process," said rebel negotiator Andres Paris. He said the FARC wanted to give Colombians a peaceful Christmas, but warned that "this unilateral decision ends January 20."

Santos has vowed to maintain military pressure instead of allowing the rebels to regroup as they did during previous failed peace talks a decade ago.

He wants to peace process wrapped up by November 2013, although the rebels said it could take much longer.

PFT: Falcons clinch NFC's top playoff seed

Redskins' Hall fights through the block of Cowboys' Phillips as he tackles Murray during their NFL football game in LandoverReuters

With 32 more games in the regular season, the playoff picture is coming into focus ? but in some cases that focus is blurry enough that you need to squint.

So if you?re having trouble keeping all the scenarios straight, we?re here to help.

Below we list every team that?s still in playoff contention, where they stand in the playoff order, and how their paths to the playoffs look over the final two weeks of the season.

AFC

Already clinched playoff berths

1. Texans: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win one more game.

2. Broncos: Clinch a first-round playoff bye if they win out.

3. Patriots: Clinch the No. 3 seed if they win out, need help to get a first-round playoff bye.

4. Ravens: Clinch the AFC North with one more win.

Control their own destiny

5. Colts: Clinch a wild card with one more win.

6. Bengals: Clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Steelers on Sunday.

7. Steelers: Clinch a playoff berth with two more wins.

Need a lot of help

8. Dolphins: Can reach the playoffs if they beat the Bills and Patriots, and the Steelers beat the Bengals but lose to the Browns, and the Bengals lose to the Ravens in addition to losing to the Steelers, and the Jets lose at least one more game.

NFC

Already clinched playoff berths

1. Falcons: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with one more win.

2. 49ers: Clinch a first-round playoff bye with two more wins.

3. Packers: Clinch the No. 3 seed if they win out, need help to get a first-round playoff bye.

Control their own destiny

4. Redskins: Clinch the NFC East if they win out.

5. Seahawks: Clinch a wild card if they win one more game.

6. Cowboys: Currently behind the Vikings in the NFC, but clinch the NFC East if they win out.

7. Giants: Currently behind the Vikings in the NFC, but clinch a playoff berth if they win out.

Need some help

8. Vikings: Would be a wild card if the playoffs started today, but even if they win out they need either the Giants to lose once or the Seahawks to lose twice in order to make the playoffs.

9. Bears: Can reach the playoffs by winning out and having both the Giants and Vikings lose once, or either the Giants or Vikings lose once plus the Seahawks losing twice, or a couple of more complex scenarios. Basically, the Bears lose most tiebreakers and therefore will likely need to finish 10-6 while the other NFC wild card hopefuls finish 9-7.

Need a lot of help

10. Rams: Technically still alive but would need to win both remaining games while the Vikings, Bears and Giants all lose out, plus either the Redskins or Cowboys lose in Week 16 and then the team that loses in Week 16 wins the Week 17 Cowboys-Redskins game.

And there you have it. A Rams-Dolphins Super Bowl is still possible.
