Sony launched its current flagship smartphone, the Xperia S, at CES earlier this year following its split with Ericsson. And now, some eight months later, the company has unveiled the Sony Xperia T at IFA in Berlin?- a new device that's likely designed to take on the smartphone behemoths like Apple?s forthcoming next-generation iPhone and Samsung?s top-end Galaxy S3.?

Size & Weight

The Xperia S measures 128 x 64 x 10.6mm, while the T is slightly larger at 129.4 x 67.3 x 9.3mm. But while the smaller Xperia S weighs in at 144g, the T is lighter at 139g. The difference, albeit significant on paper, will likely only be noticeable to the most perceptive of consumers. While both devices have a pretty typical candy bar form factor, although the T?s rounded edges give it a smoother, sleeker appearance.

Display

We were impressed with the Xperia S? generous 4.3in display, but the T appears to be following the 'bigger is better' trend and will ship with a larger 4.55in screen. But other than the size difference, Sony has made few improvements to the display - both screens have a resolution of 1,280 x 720 and offer a capacitive touch screen. Sony's Bravia HD Engine also makes the most of the larger screen on the Xperia T, ensuring a suitably cinematic feel to video.?

Storage & Memory

Users were treated to a decent amount of storage in the Xperia S, which offers 32GB of internal space for all your movies and music. Those needing more room, however, would be disappointed to find that the handset is not upgradeable through an expansion slot.

The Xperia T, on the other hand, comes with only 16GB of internal memory, but can be expanded by up to 32GB through a microSD card slot. The T also gives users who sign up before 31 December 2012 access to 50GB of free lifetime storage through cloud storage and management service Box.

Processor

The Xperia S is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Scorpion Snapdragon processor, clocking in at 1.5GHz. By contrast, the T is powered by Qualcomm?s MSM8260-A dual-core Krait Snapdragon processor. Despite having the potential to be significantly more powerful, the Krait chipset also runs at 1.5Hz, meaning both smartphones are poised to be neck-and-neck in terms of processing power.

Software

The two handsets are on equal footing in terms of software - the Xperia S originally shipped with Android?s Gingerbread 2.3, but has been upgradeable to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich since earlier this summer. The Xperia T will come loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich, but as Sony?s new flagship, it could conceivably get a 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade before the Xperia S.

Camera

The Xperia S has a 12.1-megapixel camera with a 16x digital zoom and LED flash, while the T bests it slightly with its 13-megapixel shooter and pulsed LED flash - that means it will likely have a brighter and more precise flash discharge, though there?s no telling how it will perform in the field.

Both devices can handle 1080p HD video recording and also have a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera shooting at 720p.

Battery

In terms of battery capacity, the Xperia S ships with a standard 1,750mAh battery, offering up to 8.5 hours of talk time, 420 hours of standby time, and some 25 hours of music listening.

The T, on the other hand, sports a 1,850mAh battery typically running at 1,780mAh. Despite its more powerful battery, however, it offers a lesser talk time of seven hours, standby time of 450 hours, music listening of 16 hours, and video playback of five hours - that larger screen is no doubt partly to blame.

Connectivity

On the connectivity front, both phones have Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI output via adapters, USB and micro USB, Wi-Fi, and NFC. But the Xperia T bests the S with its addition of Smart Connect. This new app allows the user to configure what action the phone will take when something happens, like firing up the music player when headphones are plugged in, or activating the GPS when firing up a running app.

Price

Sony is selling the Xperia S from ?349 in both its black and white iterations. As for the T - which will come in black, white, and grey - pricing has yet to be revealed, but it?s expected to launch sometime next month. Retailers will likely be offering up attractive contracts to lure buyers away from the iPhone 5 though.
